Tennyson Obih, 29, a heavy cannabis user who was plagued by voices, hallucinations and delusions, was found guilty of the murder of PC John Henry in Luton in June 2007. PC Henry, 36, had been called to the murder scene after Obih had stabbed a window cleaner, Stephen Chamberlain. As he tried to come round behind Obih to make an arrest, Obih stabbed him in the chest with a 4½-inch knife, and stabbed him a second time as he lay on the ground. A phone box behind PC Henry blocked off any means of escaping Obih’s attack and the stab-proof vest he had been wearing was not done up all the way to the top. It took a baton round and two shots from a Taser finally to incapacitate Obih, who may have attacked a second policeman had another window cleaner, David Knight, not struck him over the head with a window cleaning pole. Obih had denied murdering PC Henry, but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. But a jury at Luton Crown Court rejected this defence and found him guilty of the murder of PC Henry, the attempted murder of Mr Chamberlain and the wounding of Mr Knight with intent. Obih was also convicted of aggravated burglary and assault in a separate incident on the same day. The judge, Mr Justice Bean, said: “PC Henry was a dedicated and courageous officer who gave his life upholding the rule of law and protecting the people of Luton and the danger you posed. The killing of a police officer doing his duty is fortunately still a rare event in Britain and it has also been viewed with a particular abhorrence by the law-abiding public. “The sentence for murder is, and it must be, imprisonment for life.” During the trial, the jury had heard that Obih believed that he had special powers, could predict the future and could make something explode just by pointing at it. He also distrusted the police, whom he thought were involved in his mother’s death. The judge accepted that Obih’s schizophrenia was a mitigating factor in the case, and recommended that he receive treatment at a high-security hospital. He said: “You are at present a highly dangerous man and there is a very serious risk to the public of your committing further specified offences of violence if released. Indeed, it is possible that it will never be safe to release you at all. “If the Board does ever release you, you will remain on licence and liable for recall for the rest of your life.” PC Henry’s widow, Mary, called her husband’s killer “evil” yesterday, and said: “Regardless of the sentence Tennyson Obih has received, my family will never be the same again.” Obih had paranoid schizophrenia diagnosed in 2005 after abusing alcohol and cannabis, but had stopped taking his medication and replaced it with olive oil and prayer, the court was told. He was also rarely at home when community nurses called. Bernard Richmond, QC, for Obih, said: “What on earth was happening when a man who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, had told his doctors in the winter before this tragedy that he would take olive oil and prayer, and was actively not co-operating with psychiatric professionals - what on earth was going on that this man was not seen regularly either voluntarily or under compulsion?”
