Beating bookies, especially high street ones is near impossible in the long run because they offer 5/6 for a 50/50 shot. They always have the edge, i only use bookies sparingly when i feel there is a discrepancy in the price. With the premium charge introduced to betfair effectively taking 20% of your profits the odds are even further stacked against you. As much as i love sports betting this is one of the main reasons i have been devoted most of my time and money into swing and momentum trading on the market.
