Arsene Wenger believes shutting out Didier Drogba could be the key to beating Chelsea – and revealed he passed up the chance to sign the striker for £100,000.Drogba struggled to find his best form under Luiz Felipe Scolari, but he appears to be back to his best under Guus Hiddink and is expected to lead the line against Arsenal in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final.Arsenal's FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea is exclusively live on Setanta Sports on Saturday, with kick-off at Wembley coming at 5.15pm. He has a complete focus on trying to be efficient for 90 minutes.“You see some strikers who switch on and off during the game but, with Drogba, you feel that his focus and his desire never drops.”The 31-year-old Ivory Coast striker began his professional career at Ligue 2 side Le Mans in 1998 before moving on to Ligue 1 with long-term suitors Guingamp for £80,000 in 2002.And Wenger has revealed that Arsenal considered making a bid for the striker at that time before deciding that he needed further development.“We watched Drogba very carefully when he was at Le Mans and his value was just £100,000, but we felt at the time he might not be completely ready,” he said.“Sometimes when you watch a striker playing in a scrappy championship game you can think, ‘Yes, he has something but... ’“And don’t forget we had Thierry Henry at that time.“We continued to follow his progress, but suddenly he moved to Guingamp, then to the club of his dreams at Marseille and then on to Chelsea.“Looking back now, of course it was a mistake, but it is not just us who now have regrets.“There were a lot of other clubs watching him then.”
