Police blockade crime hotspotsDean KirbyJuly 08, 2009POLICE are to blockade neighbourhoods with Baghdad-style checkpoints in a bid to catch criminals.A hand-picked team of officers are setting up roadblocks as part of a series of lightning strikes on crime hotspot areas.GMP is thought to be the first force in Britain to trial the new tactic from Wednesday.Civil liberties campaigners say they will monitor how it works.US police in Washington were criticised last year after they set up security checkpoints following a spate of shootings.Critics compared the approach to the security clampdown in Baghdad.Senior officers at GMP say the operation will see crime-hit neighbourhoods being blockaded to target a wide range of offenders.http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/new..._crime_hotspots

dont think this hasnt been brewing for timelook at how all of the estates are constructedthere are a number exits/entrances, but essentially its a closed space, police can block up each of those exits, and theres no way outthey were built like this from the 70s,

That wasn't because they wanted to control people Smaddy. It's because they had no f*ck*ng idea about planning. They were desperate to build estates and high rises after the war, and rushed into it like d*ckheads.Find me a newbuild estate today that has those enclosed spaces, corridors, and concrete slabbing shutting off everything.

OK Angeloi personally cannot name any new build estates, genuinely which ones are u talkin about?
Neither can I, that's coz they don't build them like that anymore.Regs completely prohibit it.Can only speak for the ones I've been to, but Cullen House in NW, Ayelsbury obv, Mozart before it was renovated. Almost all of the council fad estate booms were built really, really poorly and with some over enclosed corridors and sh*t.

The degree of ineptitude in social housing ever since Beveridge is staggeringLots of the mass-produced blocks of the 50s and 60s are a labyrinth of walkways and corridoors which funneled people from home, to work, to shops and back (Broadwater Farm etc). Newer estates are built specifically with open spaces, communal areas, lighting and greenery in mind. It's a pity so many communities were allowed to degenerate into slums for three generations before the lessons were learned though
