Amidst much speculation, the International Association of Athletics Federations demanded to conduct a gender verification test, the results of which are not yet known, on Semenya in the weeks before the 800 m event at the World Championships. Semenya has said that she is unconcerned about the test and rumours surrounding her gender, despite two of her rivals in the race's final, Mariya Savinova and Elisa Piccione, raising their concerns.Reaction in South Africa towards the IAAF's actions has been mainly negative, and a number of athletes, including Michael Johnson, have criticized the way that the governing body handled the situation. The head Athletics South Africa and Caster's grandmother have angrily dismissed the speculation and both publicly asserted that she is indeed female.
