No its pointlessfirst of all it has 4 GB of ram on a 32 bit operating system, so you'll potentially only ever have access to 3.2 GB of it, for 64 bit processors/operating systems, its another storysecondly, why the hell are you thinking of buying a laptop from john lewis?for that price you can get yourself a dell xps laptop better spec'd

Nothing you can do about it, the fault lies back many years ago with the architectural decision made on 32 bit systems that have a mathematical limitation on addresses

There's loads mateTry Dell, DABS, EBuyer etc etc ad nauseamAs for the "advice" from Edgar...what does OS matter in this day and age...he can just download a 64-bit OS and install it, simple. (And it really as simple as this)IN terms of whether that is worth it, it doesn't seem too bad, but being from John Lewis, I'm sure a specialist laptop.pc shop will have a better deal.Good luck.

So why not just upgrade to an x86_64 OS?

Upgrading to a 64bit system will be of no advantage to yourselfits hardware related
Not all the time, it depends. If his BIOS will detect the 4GB then install 64bit Vista or Windows 7 and off he goes. But without testing he will never know. You can't fully know his hardware/chipset spec bar the fact he's told you he has 4GB ram with a Dual Core processor.
