Gun thug jailed after being caught on CCTVPaul BrittonDecember 08, 2009A THUG who held a gun to a drinker's head outside a pub and threatened to shoot him has been caged indefinitely to protect the public.Astonishing CCTV footage shows James Lee Drewitt, 19, being overpowered by the innocent man, who grapples with the gun-toting teenager before headbutting him.The gun subsequently disappeared and is still missing.Drewitt, who has a long history of previous convictions and affiliations with south Manchester gang the Longsight Crew, was locked up for a minimum of three years.He will only be released if the parole board believes he no longer poses a risk to the public.Judge Anthony Hammond told Drewitt at Manchester Crown Court: “You are a dangerous offender”.Drewitt, of Britnall Avenue, Longsight, who uses the nickname Baby James, had only been released from a prison sentence for attacking his ex-girlfriend a month earlier, the court was told.The man and his wife, regulars at the pub who have now left Manchester after giving police a statement, were having a drink with friends.Bernadette Baxter, prosecuting, said a group of between 15 and 20 youths suddenly ran inside.ConfrontedThe man's wife was outside the pub at the time. Concerned for her welfare, he walked outside and was confronted by Drewitt. The CCTV footage shows him marching up to the man and pointing a gun at his head.Ms Baxter said: “This defendant stood in front of him holding a handgun.“He did not recognise him and did not know him.”Ms Baxter said the man was 'frozen to the spot' as Drewitt held the gun to his head and twice told him: “I am going to shoot you”.She added: “The man had the presence of mind to walk forward and headbutt the youth.”The court heard other youths then 'pounced' on Drewitt and he was stabbed.Who else has been locked up in December? Sentences and photo gallery.Ms Baxter added: “It seems that there was a degree of rivalry between two groups.”The gun was 'spirited away' during the melee, the court heard.Ms Baxter said the man later identified Drewitt from police photographs.Rhys Vaughan, defending, said: “It is clear that the defendant has connections with people at least who are involved in gang membership in the Longsight area.“It is accepted that these are very serious offences. He was himself the victim of a fairly serious injury following the totality of the incident.”Drewitt pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence on that basis that it was an imitation.He also admitted a charge under the Harassment Act after he made threatening phone calls to his ex-girlfriend from jail.Judge Hammond added: “The only sentence I can pass is one of detention for public protection.”
