Santa is actually the 4th century catholic bishop Nicolas of Myra, from Turkey. he was known to give poor people gifts at 6 december and legend has it that it prevented a city from starvation and helped a distressed shipthen later on in life he was imprisoned by the emporor at the time, then released by the next emporor. Once he died he was laid to rest in Myra, but some Italian merchants came by and brought his body to take back to Barri in Italy.he became Saint Nicolas and was given december 6th as his saint day (known as the feast day for children), legend has it that on the eve of the 5th Nicolas would come down from heaven in either a grey flying horse or white donkey accompied by black peter to give giftsThen in the sixteen century the protestants didn't like the whole idea as their belief was that Jesus gave kids gifts such as body and soul to them on the 25th December and scrapped the feast day, however some countries such as amsterdam still stuck to itthen when amsterdam conquered american they renamed what we now call new york, new amsterdam bringing along the idea of december 6 as a feast day, then in the seventeen century the british took over new amsterdam and named it new york. The british protestant kids wanted a feast days similar to their christmas, so the head of the church declared 25th december as that day forgetting Jesus's birthdayso while everyone is opening presents on the 25th, its actually ment to be done on the 6th, and leave the 25th for the celebration of Jesus's birthday, but ofcourse most people won't know this especially children
