its a mix

Half are protesting against the government (most of these against the supreme council and Islamic state)

+

Half are supporters of the government, who have been called to come out today by Iranian government to counter the anti gov demos.

The more educated you are, the more you are against the regime.

Right now the clashes are taking place between Anti gov supporters and the Islamic militia

what is islamic militia?

the islamic militia is exactly what it says on the tin. Basiji and revolutionary army. Supports the supreme council who are funded by the oil and gas in Iran. It has been like this 30 years. Before there was a Shah of Iran who was basically f*ck*ng the country up working for Britain and America. Shah was in power for all the previous century apart from a brief period when Mosadegh took power. Mosadegh was the most popular elected official, pretty much ever. He began nationalising the oil and gas industries, so Iran's economy and it's people would gain. But a military coup led by Britain and America in 1942 ensured that Mosadegh was taken out of power, and replaced with the Shah (britain and americas pawn)

1979 the people revolt, in many different factions, but the followers of Khomeini were the majority. The islamic revolution took place. Since then education has decreased, the nation has become poorer, and the people have been abused by the islamic state. It is a much worse state then pre revolution. Tensions have risen, and since they did not clamp down on anti government thought as much as they did in the 80s then they did in the 90s, now we see a youth with their blood boiling over.

1.46pm:

It's very difficult to know exactly what has taken place today because the accounts differ so sharply. Compare and contrast the following. First here's an account from a caller to Radio Farda translated by blogger homylafayette.

"I was in Sadeghiyeh and though people were not holding up any symbols, I think most of them were against the regime because they wouldn't respond to the official chants from the loudspeakers.

The security forces attacked the crowd violently, with cables, batons, and gas. Where I was, I can say that the 22 Bahman celebrations did not take place. I saw a small gathering of regime supporters and even they were dispersed by the police.

The people were beaten and I even saw some seriously injured individuals. That's what happens when you're attacked with chains. But no shots were fired."

Secondly here's state-run Press TV's write up of today's events:

Millions of Iranians across the country have taken to the streets to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Huge demonstrations were held all across the nation on Thursday in commemoration of the occasion.

In the capital Tehran, an extraordinarily high number of people from all walks of life marched across the city and gathered at Azadi (Freedom) Square to take part in the festivities. They were carrying banners denouncing the enemies of the country.

A few hundred of supporters of Iran's defeated presidential candidates also rallied in Tehran.

Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi gathered in a western Tehran district.

Police stepped up security in the area to prevent possible disturbances. Defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi was seen among the protesters.

They think this is funny, but its ironic that the positions of power since the shah left have not been rearranged, just been refilled by members of the supreme council, and abused even more so!

Iran state tv uses colour filter to shade out green on tv - 11 Feb protests - !!! LMAO

Thursday, February 11, 2010 - 09:56

Tehran, Iran - The Iranian government was totally surprised today by the number of protesters (greens) waving their flags and flowing into Azadi square where there is a heavy police and security presence as well as reports of clashes between the Iran regime security and the protesters.

Most state internet sites have been brought down or to a standstill.

The Iranian government is now struggling to show pro government supporters in Azadi square because of all the green there so they have resolved to desperate measures using a colour filter to not show green on their broadcasts according to reports.

EU Parliament slams Nokia Siemens role in Iran

Updated: Thursday, February 11, 2010

15:00GMT—10:00AM/EST

Washington, 11 February (WashingtonTV)—Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday criticized Nokia Siemens for providing censorship and surveillance systems to Iran.

Nokia Siemens, a joint venture between Finnish telecom giant Nokia and the German industrial group Siemens, insists that it has not provided anything to Iran that is not completely standard in other countries around the world.

In a resolution adopted on Wednesday, the European Parliament said that by providing the technology to Iran, Nokia Siemens was “instrumental to [the] persecution and arrests of Iranian dissidents”.

The resolution further called on European Union institutions to immediately “ban the export of surveillance technology by European companies to governments and countries such as Iran.”

Nokia Siemens said the technology it has provided Iran cannot be used for the monitoring or censorship of Internet traffic.

“The implication that we have provided censorship technology is wrong,” a Nokia Siemens spokesman said, according to the London-based online tech publication, The Register. “We will be clarifying any inaccuracy in their understanding of our business in Iran with the European Parliament.”

Although they haven't provided Iran with anything other then what they provide to everyone else, hopefully in the future technology giants will take into account where they are sending their technology, and what it is being used for. This is good. yes.

Seems like everythings changed. Something different about today. I'm pretty sure it was Ashura/hanging the two youths that really mashed it all up, made the people that didn't even support green go green.
