England's map of infidelity: In saintly Surrey less than 1% of spouses play away... but almost HALF in Devon are unfaithful

Cheating map of Britain has been drawn up revealing Devon as the capital of the country for unfaithful partners.

Britain's largest survey of sex and marriage has revealed that the coastal county is the UK's most unfaithful, with a staggering 47 per cent of spouses currently playing away.

The poll, conducted by a extramarital dating agency, also revealed that three per cent of the UK population admitted to cheating on their current partner.

Devon was the worst area for affairs, with almost half of its population admitting they have cheated on their current partner, while Avon came second with 19 per cent of unfaithful spouses.

But wives and husbands living in Surrey can breath a sigh of relief as the country was found to be the UK's most saintly - with less than one per cent admitted to being currently involved in an extramarital relationship, and only two per cent having cheated on their partner in the past.

Nationally, three per cent of spouses admitted to be currently cheating, and a further seven per cent disclosed that they had cheated on their current wife or husband previously.

And according to the survey, five per cent of spouses would cheat 'if they thought they could get away with it'.

The independent survey was conducted by OnePoll on behalf of a dating website aimed at married people, IllicitEncounters.com.

Celebrity Chef Tim Burton Race can lay claim to one of the notorious instances of infidelity in Devon.

In 2007 he left his wife Kim and their six children after embarking on an affair with former personal assistant Susan Ward.

Burton Race was running an award-winning restaurant in Dartmouth In Devon when the affair came to light.

Rosie Freeman-Jones, representative for the site, added: 'The results are very surprising - the number of people cheating in Devon is staggeringly high.

'I think there is more on an opportunity to cheat in places like London, but in cities people tend to be more open to multi-person relationships than in rural areas where it's much more traditional and you're pretty much married to one person and that's it for life.

'People get so attached to people and give them everything psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually and especially of they have married at a young age, the tendency is to eventually become trapped.

'And when people feel trapped, they become unhappy, and it is then that spouses might cheat on their partners and come to us in order to do so.' Sara Hartly, administrator for the site, added: 'In our opinion, Devon have just been much more honest in their answers.

'It has previously been estimated that around 40 per cent of women and 60 per cent of men will cheat during marriage, so these figures seem incredibly low.

'Traditional values seem to have a strong hold in rural towns and villages, therefore many feel a strong pressure to marry.

'As a result, we see a lot of members from places like Devon, who married young and now feel trapped in their relationships.

'The Western Isles, which is widely considered to be one of the most religious places in the UK, has a higher percentage of website members than most other counties.'

The site has more than 5,000 members in Devon, and in excess of 450,000 across the UK.

WARNING: NOT EVERYONE IS SUITED TO HAVING AN AFFAIR. THEY ARE NOT AN ALTERNATIVE TO WORKING ON OR ENDING A MARRIAGE. NOT ALL AFFAIRS HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON A MARRIAGE, SOME CAN BE VERY DAMAGING. ALWAYS CONSIDER OTHER PEOPLE AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE AN AFFAIR, PLEASE SELECT YOUR PARTNER WISELY.
