Michael Essien has been included in a provisional 30-man squad for Ghana ahead of the World Cup.

The Chelsea midfielder has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury during the African Cup of Nations in January.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has been keeping a close eye on the 27-year-old's rehabilitation and has named him in a squad for a training camp at the end of May.

Rajevac has also selected four players, including three goalkeepers, who play club football in Ghana.

Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has been called up despite previously playing for Germany at youth level, although his inclusion in the final World Cup party depends on a green light from Fifa.

Boateng's brother Jerome was named in a provisional Germany squad earlier this week and the two could play against each other at the World Cup.

Ghana open their Group D campaign against Serbia on 13 June before taking on Australia six days later and then Germany on 23rd June.

Japan have named their 23-man squad for the World Cup finals and star names Shunsuke Nakamura and Junichi Inamoto have been included.

Both Nakamura and Inamoto returned to play in Japan from Europe earlier this season, and that tactic worked as they both did enough to book a place on the flight to South Africa.

Coach Takeshi Okada has named four European-based players in his squad.

Keisuke Honda of CKSA Moscow, Grenoble's Daisuke Matsui and Makoto Hasebe of Wolfsburg and Catania star Takayuki Morimoto have all made it.

One shock inclusion was veteran goalkeeper Yoshi Kawaguchi, who is expected to be number three keeper for the finals.

Japan will now prepare for their first pre-tournament friendly with South Korea on May 24 before heading to Europe for matches with England and Ivory Coast.

Their opening group game is against Cameroon on June 19th in Durban.

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Seigo Narazaki (Nagoya Grampus), Eiji Kawashima (Kawasaki Frontale), Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi (Jubilo Iwata)

Defenders: Yuji Nakazawa (Yokohama F-Marinos), Tulio (Nagoya Grampus), Yasuyuki Konno (FC Tokyo), Daiki Iwamasa (Kashima Antlers), Yuichi Komano (Jubilo Iwata), Yuto Nagatomo (FC Tokyo), Atsuto Uchida (Kashima Antlers)

Midfielders: Shunsuke Nakamura (Yokohama F-Marinos), Yasuhito Endo (Gamba Osaka), Kengo Nakamura (Kawasaki Frontale), Junichi Inamoto (Kawasaki Frontale), Yuki Abe (Urawa Reds), Makoto Hasebe (VfL Wolfsburg), Keisuke Honda (CSKA Moscow), Daisuke Matsui (Grenoble)

Forwards: Shinji Okazaki (Shimizu S-Pulse), Keiji Tamada (Nagoya Grampus), Yoshito Okubo (Vissel Kobe), Takayuki Morimoto (Catania), Kisho Yano (Albirex Niigata)

New Zealand have named two uncapped players in their World Cup finals squad.

Coach Ricki Herbert has confirmed his 23-man list, and named Winston Reid and Aaron Clapham in his party - both of whom have yet to play at senior level for the All Whites.

Defender Reid plays for Danish side FC Midtjylland, whilst midfielder Clapham is with New Zealand-based Canterbury United.

On Clapham's inclusion, Herbert said: "Aaron has come into this group and looked very comfortable.

"He is the type of player that should be around the international scene for many years and he has a big future in the professional game."

Herbert has named six-British based players including his captain Ryan Nelsen from Blackburn. The others are Ipswich's Tommy Smith, Chris Killen of Middlesbrough, Chris Wood of West Bromwich Albion, Plymouth's Rory Fallon and Michael McGlinchey of Motherwell.

The squad will now assemble in Auckland on May 19th ahead of a friendly with Australia in Melbourne.

The team will then spend time in Austria for a training camp and will play against both Serbia and Slovenia before heading to South Africa on June 6th.

New Zealand open their campaign against Slovakia on June 20th.
