Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres have been included in Spain's 30-man preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Arsenal captain Fabregas and Liverpool striker Torres are both currently recovering from injuries which forced the duo to miss the end of the Premier League season.

Fabregas is making progress from the cracked fibula which he suffered during the Gunners' UEFA Champions League tie against Barcelona at the end of March.

The midfielder declared over the weekend that he would be fit in time for the finals and expects to be ready to feature in a friendly against Saudi Arabia later this month.

Torres recently underwent a knee operation and is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the World Cup, which starts on 11th June.

He has been included in the provisional Spain squad by coach Vicente del Bosque and will be given every chance to prove his fitness.

The striker's Liverpool team-mate Jose Reina is one of five goalkeepers in the preliminary party, along with Barcelona's Victor Valdes, who has yet to win a cap.

Valdes' Barcelona colleague Pedro is another uncapped player in the squad, while Atletico Madrid keeper David De Gea, Osasuna defender Cesar Azpilicueta and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez have yet to win senior honours.

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is also included in the squad after suffering from injury in recent weeks.

Del Bosque will whittle his squad down to 23 names by 1st June ahead of Group H games against Chile, Honduras and Switzerland.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Diego Lopez (Villarreal), David De Gea (Atletico Madrid), Victor Valdes (Barcelona).

Defenders: Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa (all Real Madrid), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol (both Barcelona), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Cesar Azpilicueta (Osasuna).

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta (all Barcelona), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), Javier Martinez (Athletic Bilbao), David Silva (Valencia).

Forwards: Daniel Guiza (Fenerbahce), Juan Manuel Mata, David Silva, David Villa (Valencia), Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas (both Sevilla), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), Santiago Cazorla (Villarreal), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao).

Thomas Sorensen has been selected in a provisional 26-man squad for the World Cup as the Denmark goalkeeper continues his recovery from a dislocated elbow.

The Stoke City shot-stopper suffered the injury at Chelsea late last month and is in a race against time to prove his fitness before the finals.

He recently expressed confidence that he would be back in time for the tournament in South Africa and has been named in the provisional party by coach Morten Olsen.

Sorensen has been the Danish No.1 for nine years and will be key to their hopes of progressing out of Group E which also contains Holland, Japan and Cameroon.

The 26 players named on Monday will take part in a friendly against Senegal in Aalborg on 27th May with four others on standby.

Surprise inclusion

Olsen will then whittle down the squad to 23 prior to Denmark's World Cup opener against the Dutch on 14th June.

Malaga defender Patrick Mtiliga was the surprise inclusion having not played for his country since November 2008.

"We had Patrick with us against Wales in November 2008 when he played for one half and we have followed his progress closely since," said Olsen.

"With the move from NAC Breda to Malaga he went to a better club and a better league. We believe Patrick is the perfect fit for the type of opposition we will face."

One player absent from the squad is Leon Andreasen, who revealed last week that he would be undergoing leg surgery which would see him miss the World Cup.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Jesper Christiansen (FC Copenhagen), Kim Christensen (IFK Gothenburg), Stephan Andersen (Brondby), Thomas Sorensen (Stoke City);

Defenders: Daniel Agger (Liverpool), Lars Jacobsen (Blackburn), Patrick Mtiliga (Malaga), Per Kroldrup (Fiorentina), Simon Busk Poulsen (AZ Alkmaar), Simon Kjaer (Palermo), William Kvist (FC Copenhagen).

Midfielders: Christian Poulsen (Juventus), Christian Eriksen (Ajax), Daniel Jensen (Werder Bremen), Jakob Poulsen (AGF Aarhus), Michael Silberbauer (FC Utrecht), Mikkel Beckmann (Randers), Thomas Enevoldsen (FC Groningen), Thomas Kahlenberg (Wolfsburg), Dennis Rommedahl (Ajax), Jesper Gronkjaer (FC Copenhagen), Martin Jorgensen (AGF Aarhus).

Strikers: Michael Krohn-Dehli (Brondby), Nicklas Bendtner (Arsenal), Jon Dahl Tomasson (Feyenoord), Soren Larsen (Duisburg).

Stand by: Anders Moller Christensen (Odense), Leon Jessen, Mikkel Thygesen (both FC Midtjylland), Morten Rasmussen (Celtic).

URUAGUAY

Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez has left Porto star Cristian Rodriguez out of his World Cup squad.

The Porto winger would have been suspended for the first two group games, but he was still expected to be taken to South Africa.

But Tabarez has now opted not to take the 24-year-old to South Africa after naming a 26-man preliminary squad, rather than the 30 expected.

He also unexpectedly named three home-based midfielders in Arevalo Rios, Alvaro Gonzalez and Jorge Rodriguez.

Tabarez also confirmed which goalkeepers would be backing up first choice Fernando Muslera, and he went for Juan Castillo and Martin Silva, leaving out the more experienced duo of Sebastian Vieira and Fabian Carini.

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera (Lazio), Juan-Guillermo Castillo (Cali), Martin Silva (Defensor Sporting)

AUSTRALIA

Australia have named 11 British-based players in their preliminary World Cup squad.

Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek has named a 31-man initial squad for the finals, although goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic is only added as cover.

Verbeek has named Harry Kewell, Mark Bresciano, Brett Emerton and Vince Grella, despite the quartet all carrying injuries, but all four are expected to go to South Africa.

Verbeek has had to defend calling up Kewell, despite his injury problems, saying: "There are rumours, there are opinions, but Harry will be ready.

"The medical staff and Harry himself convinced me that Harry will be OK.

Last updated: 10th May 2010

..

Mikel: Expected to be fit

.Nigeria have named a preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup, with Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel among eight Premier League players in the party.

Mikel is currently sidelined with a knee injury and he will miss Chelsea's FA Cup final clash against Portsmouth at Wembley on Saturday.

However, he is expected to be back to fitness by the end of the month and should be available to claim his place in the final 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Joining Mikel in new coach Lars Lagerback's squad is Portsmouth striker John Utaka, who was overlooked for the African Cup of Nations at the start of the year.

Fellow Pompey forward Nwankwo Kanu is in the squad and there is also a place for Bolton Wanderers defender Danny Shittu.

Everton trio Joseph Yobo, Yakubu and Victor Anichebe, along with Fulham midfielder d*ckson Etuhu, complete the Premier League contingent.

Monaco's promising midfielder Lukman Haruna is in the squad, while goalkeeper Akpan Bassey and defender Peter Suswan are the only members of the party who play their club football in Nigeria.

Lagerback, who replaced Amodu Shaibu as coach earlier in the year, has also moved to dismiss suggestions he has been under pressure to select certain players.

The Swede said: "Individual skills and fitness levels were considered when picking the players, so it does not matter if a player is 20 or 35 years old."

He has been given time to prove his fitness for the competition after being included in the preliminary squad, which will be reduced to 23 names by 1st June.

Queiroz said: "Unknowns can emerge from the time the players get together and we want to be sure that when the time comes to take decisions everyone will be ready."

Former Manchester United assistant manager Queiroz has included four Premier League-based players in his squad, including Chelsea trio Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho and Deco.

SOUTH AFRICA

Hosts South Africa have named a 29-man preliminary squad for the World Cup finals, which includes Benni McCarthy.

McCarthy joined West Ham earlier this year, but he has been limited to just five appearances.

Despite this, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has included him along with fellow Premier League stars Steven Pienaar, Aaron Mokoena and Kagisho Dikgacoi.

One surprising omission from the squad was Racing Santander defender Nasied Morris.

"The bulk of the 23 players for the World Cup will come from these 29 players, but maybe we get injuries or loss of form, which is why I have left the door open," Parreira said.

"Trimming down the squad is not the ideal situation but it's something that has to be done. We can't take any number we want and we have to make decisions which are always difficult.

"It doesn't mean the players that will be left out are not good enough, but me and my technical team took a long time discussing this list carefully."

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates), Shu-Aib Walters (Maritzburg United), Rowen Fernandez (Arminia Bielefeld)

Defenders: Matthew Booth (Mamelodi Sundowns), Siboniso Gaxa (Mamelodi Sundowns), Innocent Mdledle (Mamelodi Sundowns), Bongani Khumalo (SuperSport United), Tsepo Masilela (Maccabi Haifa), Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth), Bryce Moon (PAOK), Anele Ngcongca (Racing Genk), Siyabonga Sangweni (Golden Arrows), Lucas Thwala (Orlando Pirates)

Midfielders: Surprise Moriri (Mamelodi Sundowns), Franklin Cale (Mamelodi Sundowns), Lance Davids (Ajax Cape Town), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Fulham), Andile Jali (Orlando Pirates), Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Steven Pienaar (Everton), MacBeth Sibaya (Rubin Kazan)

Strikers: Benni McCarthy (West Ham), Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Siyabonga Nomvethe (Moroka Swallows), Bernard Parker.

SLOVENIA

Slovenian coach Matjaz Kek has named his preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup finals.

Reports had suggested that Newcastle starlet Haris Vuckic could be drafted in, but he has not been included in the squad.

West Brom's Robert Koren is captain and leads the squad, which also includes former Barnsley stopper Suad Filekovic.

There is also no room for highly-rated goalkeeper Vid Belec, Genoa's Dejan Lazarevic, Anton Zlogar of Omonia, or former captain Klemen Lavric.

"Now we have to check out all the players, they will do medical tests and train with our coaches," said Kek.

"Then we will have a better picture of who will play at the World Cup and who will stay home."

Slovenia will prepare for the World Cup in Brunico, Italy before facing England, Algeria and the USA in the finals.

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Samir Handanovic (Udinese), Jasmin Handanovic (Mantova), Aleksander Seliga (Sparta Rotterdam), Jan Koprivec (Gallipoli)

The pair, who have been restricted by injury this season, have been included in German coach Otto Rehhagel's 30-man squad - which will be reduced to 23 on 1st June.

Seitaridis made just eight league appearances for Greek double-winners Panathinaikos while utility man Patsatzoglou missed most of the World Cup qualifying campaign due to a knee injury.
