1st try at dubstep

Safe, but I want to read up on software synthesizers. All the synths in that clip was a result of me messing with the presets. Need to know exactly what every knob and value does so I can get a sound that I'm comfortable with as opposed to achieving it by chance. Any recommendations?

I dont really know bout reading up... butIve learnt everyhing i know by trial n error... experimentingOpening up the DAW with the intention of NOT making music.. jus fiddling with the knobs and creating sounds. Then saving those sounds for future tunage.. I duno if i would recommend reading up unless ur looking to have a future in sound engineering or something similar as IMO it takes the fun out of it (although all knowledge is good, jus my personal opinion)It's more important to learn about Frequencies i reckon... knowin where to cut off and boost ur sounds to gt the most out of em, and to "un-muddy" the final mix. This sh*t can make or break a tune.I could reccomend some good VST's (if ur using plugins) for easy wave-shaping

okay... number 1Cakewalk z3ta.Beautiful multi-oscillation vst, it has presets.. but you can pretty much make ANYTHING with this sh*t.Get that.. play with it a lil u'll be waveshaping in no time (also has its own dedicated waveshaper for each OSC.number 2 would probably be FM8.. as above.. very easy to use, a plethora of sounds..also VERY easy to route effects and bus channels so u dont waste valuble creation time re-creating everything you done on a previous patch. Those two will do just fine for now.. to understand the knobs anyway. If those are too much (looking at 20 plus knobs can be a little daunting at first..)... maybe try fiddling with Bass Station (Novation).. kinda simplistic, but thats what i started off with tbh.Thru that, i learned a GREAT DEAL, and more importantly... what all them bastard buttons do!

Cosign FM8Make all my basses in FM8Native Instruments Absynth is a good learner synthesizerOh yh the beatwork on the build up to the drop, and have a 2nd main pattern to alternate, Your 1st pattern for 16 bars sounds kl, but it's making me anticipate a change.

if u wanna learn about synthesis, before u jump on them ones like FM8 or Absynth grab a computer music magazine for £6 and get to grips with one like CM101, or get a copy of reason and play about with the Subtractor synth. It has 2 oscillators, 2 filters and and 2 LFOs, so it's nice and simple but u can still generate sum nice sounds. Basically the first type of synthesis u wanna get to grips with is subtractive synthesis, most 'analogue modelled' synths use it. FM8 uses frequency modulation synthesis, (hence the name) which is pretty specialist. Absynth is more aimed at pads and sound scapes, and i found the best way to get to grips with synthesis is to learn how to make bass. There's nothing wrong with learning on the synths that others have said, but certain features on them r specific to THAT synth, if think u need to take a more general approach while ur learning.

what about using 3xOSC on fruity? seemed simple enough. all i know i about is the waveforms, lfo's and filters. i'm assuming you need to know more than that to make an authentic wobbly bassline.edited first post. upped an improved track.

not really mate, u need to know a bit about how to modulate different sources but to make a classic dubstep wobble, take a bass sound u like, put a low pass filter on it and then assign an LFO to modulate the LFO's frequency cutoff, i've never used the 3xOSC but i imagine it's quite easy to accomplish. Here u go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j4clZLzhbw

EDIT: listening to the track, it's good, there's a wobble in there, learn about EQ, and maybe play about with the octave u play it on. think about where u want the bass sound to come and what needs to sit below and above in the mix. If u want the bass to be the lowest sound make sure everything else has its low end cut off where the bass is hitting the most in the audio frequency range. I like those vocal snippets you've used!

thanks for all the tips and advice, gonna put it to use on my next try.will post up the fruity project file later, open-source music and that. thumbup3.gif/@djbmc those vocals were taken from http://www.mediafire.com/?mftmfjhimwdused one gross beats presets to make it sound like that./i was checking out the dubstep forum and looked around in audionews.ru and NI Massive seems to be a big fav. , was surprised that it hasn't been mentioned here. are there any particular reasons as to why?

Massive is cool but it's well complex, i know a bit about synths and it confuses the hell out of me! If u get it whatever u do don't use the Brutal Electro presets! check them out, you'll recognise them straight away.Safe for that link as well mate.
