World Cup 2010: Nigeria president suspends team

Nigeria's president has suspended his nation's football team from international competition for two years after a poor showing at the World Cup.

Special presidential adviser Ima Niboro told reporters the decision by Goodluck Jonathan will "enable Nigeria to reorganise its football".

The BBC understands the Nigerian Football Federation is to be dissolved and an interim board appointed.

Nigeria were knocked out in the group stages without winning a game.

Niboro said: "This directive became necessary following Nigeria's poor performance in the ongoing World Cup."

Under Fifa rules, government interference with national teams is strictly forbidden.

COMMUNIQUE OF THE MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE NFF IN ABUJA ON TUESDAY, 29th JUNE, 2010

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation met at the NFF Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday, 29th June, 2010 to discuss salient issues around Nigeria football and resolved as follows:

1) The Executive Committee tendered apology to the Federal Government and all football –loving Nigerians for the early ouster of the Super Eagles from the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, despite immense support by Mr. President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), and other well –meaning Nigerians.

2) In the determination to rebuild the National Team from the perspective of recent experiences, the World Cup coaching crew is mandated to embark on a highly rigorous technical process of raising a new team to be dominated by the youth and home –grown talent. The crew is to develop a long –term and sustained training programme that will give the new team adequate exposure and confidence ahead of imminent qualifying competitions.

3) Furthermore, while Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback observes his two –week leave in Sweden, Coach Augustine Eguavoen will take temporary charge of the National Team. Henceforth, there will be only one Super Eagles, with no foreign –based or home –based appelations. Discipline will continue to be key issue in Nigerian national team camps, national youth teams will be exposed to more international tournaments and the senior teams will be made to play more friendly games.

4) Committee directed the Technical Department to closely monitor the running of the youth/feeder teams of Premier League Clubs on the domestic scene in the interest of proper development of the game.

5) Executive Committee also approved the engagement of a highly –qualified Psychologist for the national teams.

6) The Committee firmly disagreed with those claiming that Nigeria football is in a dwindling state, insisting that no previous Board has qualified Nigeria for all major tournaments internationally (FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, men and women’s Olympic football tournaments, FIFA U-20 men and women’s World Cups, FIFA U-17 men and women’s tournaments, FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup), as well as several other off –field achievements that the present Board can boast of.

7) Executive Committee directed the Secretariat to ensure that the national U-20 women’s team,Falconets and the U-17 girls’ team, Flamingoes, prepare adequately for upcoming FIFA championships. The Falconets will take part in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany (13th July – 1st August) while Flamingoes will participate in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago (5th – 25th September, 2010). It was also resolved that bonuses paid to players of the national women’s teams (Super Falcons, Falconets, Flamingoes) be enhanced immediately.

8) Committee upheld the verdict of the Arbitration Tribunal set up to determine the NPL election issue, and directed the NPL to comply accordingly.

9) The Executive Committee hailed the Secretariat for work done so far in respect of the new, ultra –modern NFF Headquarters, and urged that all arrangements must be concluded for the foundation –laying and phased construction to begin as soon as possible.
