World Cup final: Howard Webb to referee Holland v Spain

English referee Howard Webb has been appointed to officiate Sunday's World Cup final.

Webb from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, was overlooked for the two semi-final matches, but was part of a select group of officials retained by Fifa for the latter stages of the tournament.

The Premier League referee and his English assistants Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey were widely praised for their performance in previous matches. Fifa announced that a European referee would be appointed to oversee the final between Holland and Spain, and Webb has been selected for football's showpiece occasion.

The former policeman and his team took charge of Brazil's fiery last 16 match with Chile and were also hailed for their decisions during Italy's group defeat by Slovakia.

An Englishman last took charge of the World Cup final 1974, when Jack Taylor oversaw West Germany's victory over the Netherlands.

Webb and his team officiated May's Champions League final in Madrid, between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

Webb has refereed three matches in this World Cup so far, starting off with Spain's shock defeat by Switzerland.

There was some unhappiness in Spain but Webb's team really impressed in Italy v Slovakia where Cann was spot on with a tight call to rule out a Fabio Quagliarella equaliser.

In the first knock-out round match between Brazil and Chile, Mullarkey was praised for his decision to allow Luis Fabiano's goal while Chile defenders were claiming offside.
