Nicolas Anelka has been banned for 18 matches by the French Football Federation (FFF) over his conduct at this summer's World Cup.

The Chelsea striker was sent home from the tournament after a row with coach Raymond Domenech and the France team refused to train in protest.

The FFF also banned Patrice Evra for five matches, Franck Ribery for three and Jeremy Toulalan for one.

And to think we have problems.

French football is f*cked.

"This whole thing is a nonsense, to turn the page because [new coach] Laurent Blanc needs to be able to work in peace," Anelka told France Soir.

"These people are clowns. I'm dying with laughter," he added.

Anelka said the suspension "has no relevance whatsoever" because as far as he is concerned, his international career finished when he was thrown out of training on 19 June.

PARIS, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Nine players who took part in France's World Cup fiasco, among them goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and winger Florent Malouda, were named on Thursday in coach Laurent Blanc's squad for Euro 2012 qualifiers early next month.

Blanc had left out all 23 members of the World Cup squad for his first match in charge, a 2-1 defeat by Norway in a friendly in Oslo on Aug. 11.

Nine of them return for the qualifiers against Belarus on Sept. 3 in Paris and Bosnia four days later in Sarajevo, although the 21-man squad remained somewhat experimental with four uncapped players.

"To have a young team is a good thing but it's not enough to be competitive at the highest level," Blanc told a news conference. "We tried to come up with a mixture of talented youngsters and more experienced players who can guide them."

Blanc, who took over from Raymond Domenech after the World Cup and is trying to rebuild the team after their shambolic performance in South Africa, called up Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro for the first time.

"He's young, scores a lot of a goals and can be an interesting solution up front," Blanc said of the 23-year-old Gameiro, who scored 17 Ligue 1 goals last season.

The other uncapped players on the list are goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso and defenders Mamadou Sakho and Benoit Tremoulinas.

Midfielder Jeremy Toulalan, who was banned for one game for his part in the World Cup revolt and could have played the second qualifier, was not on the list.

"For the moment, Jeremy is not indispensable but he's an interesting player for the future," said Blanc, pointing out that the Olympique Lyon player had switched from holding midfielder to central defender at club level.

The French Football Federation (FFF) banned Nicolas Anelka for 18 matches, World Cup captain Patrice Evra for five and Franck Ribery for three. A fifth player summoned by the federation, Eric Abidal, escaped without sanction but Blanc did not pick him either.

Blanc also had to make do without playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, serving suspension after getting a red card in France's last match in South Africa.

France made a group-stage exit from the World Cup after boycotting a training session in support of Anelka, who was banished from the squad for insulting Domenech.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Cedric Carrasso (Girondins Bordeaux), Hugo Lloris (Olympique Lyon), Steve Mandanda (Olympique Marseille).

Defenders: Gael Clichy (Arsenal), Philippe Mexes (AS Roma), Adil Rami (Lille), Mamadou Sakho (Paris St Germain), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal), Benoit Tremoulinas (Girondins Bordeaux).

Midfielders: Abou Diaby (Arsenal), Alou Diarra (Girondins Bordeaux), Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid), Yann M'Vila (Stade Rennes), Florent Malouda (Chelsea), Jeremy Menez (AS Roma), Mathieu Valbuena (Olympique Marseille).

Forwards: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Kevin Gameiro (Lorient), Guillaume Hoarau (Paris St Germain), Loic Remy (Olympique Marseille), Louis Saha (Everton).

thats the weakest france have looked in years

*remembers the days of trezeguet, henry, pires, vieira, zidane, makelele, barthez*

TBH, bar Vieira, Zidane & Makelele & Barthez when the rest all peaked, France were sh*t, i.e. 2002-2006.

Bear in mind, France are still missing, Gourcuff, Toulalan, Nasri, Ben Arfa & Ribery.

I thought the World Cup demonstrated that names alone do not necessarily equate a balanced team on the pitch?

That's still a very good squad mentioned.

I am worried however who's going to play in the AMC role.

There's not a single playmaker there.

Former France team doctor Jean-Pierre Paclet has defended Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka's role in Les Bleus' World Cup meltdown.

Under former coach Raymond Domenech, the team managed just one point and one goal from their three Group A games. And their campaign descended into total anarchy when the squad refused to train two days before their third match against hosts South Africa, in protest at Anelka's exclusion from the party following a dressing-room bust-up with Domenech.

But Paclet, in extracts from his book L'Implosion reproduced in the Sunday Times, wrote: "When Domenech went to see Anelka at Chelsea last season, Anelka warned him, let him know that there was no point taking him to South Africa if it was to play him in a position he didn't like. The problem with the French team wasn't Anelka. You have to understand he is loved within the squad, immensely popular, even if he's introverted."

By contrast, Paclet has pinpointed Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri as a key figure in the infighting in the France team in recent years.

Nasri was not included in the squad for the World Cup, but Paclet alleges that the 23-year-old was a source of a disquiet which dates back further than June after upsetting captain Patrice Evra and senior professionals Thierry Henry, William Gallas and former Marseille team-mate Franck Ribery.

"Here was a kid with a dozen caps looking down on players with a hundred. Scarcely believable," Paclet claimed. "His behaviour gets on the nerves of almost everybody and he has the gift of really annoying Henry, Gallas and Patrice Evra.

"Most of all, the relationship between Nasri and Ribery was very tense, from the time they were together at Marseille. They were more like kids in a playground rather than professionals on a pitch.

"Ribery would cause general laughter if, say, he put salt in my coffee. If he did it to Nasri, there would be no sense of humour from him."
