SHG’s Negro sets record

PEORIA — Sacred Heart-Griffin senior Madz Negro took fourth place out of 465 runners with a school-record time of 17 minutes 15 seconds Saturday at the Peoria Notre Dame Richard Spring Invite at Detweiller Park.

She broke the previous three-mile record of 17:34 set by all-stater Anna Newell at the Class AA state meet in 2005. Negro’s time on the state meet course earned her a top-four finish for the third time in SHG’s first three meets.

Schaumburg’s Colette Falsey was the individual champion in 17:07.

Led by Madie Alexander’s 48th-place finish, defending Class 2A state champion Springfield High was 16th in the team standings with 527 points. Schaumburg won with 83 points.

Three miles in 17 minutes...that is unbelievably fast!

I'm aiming to get 3 miles in under 21 and that's hard enough.
