THIS IS RIDICULOUS

Police officers are being encouraged to categorise people according to which celebrity they are most like.

Are you a Jeremy Paxman or a Lenny Henry, a Lorraine Kelly or a Madonna?

That is the question that the police now ponder when they encounter members of the public, whether as crime victims or as suspects.

In order to help officers to analyse the kind of people they are dealing with, they have been advised that there are four basic "social styles" – each linked to television personalities.

The system, introduced in a number of British forces, offers tips on how to classify an individual into one of the four types, from their behaviour and the things they say.

One training document, seen by The Sunday Telegraph and used by South Yorkshire Police, teaches staff that they might encounter:

The Lorraine Kelly: An "amiable" person, motivated by security, who may have a "stabilising effect on others" but "can be seen as indecisive and unwilling to take risks". They may say "I hope I'm not going to get anyone into trouble, but ..." Other examples: Fern Britton, Philip Schofield, Sir Michael Parkinson.

– The Jeremy Paxman: An "analytical" individual, motivated by respect, who may say "Could you clarify the situation for me?". Other examples: Dermot Murnaghan, Sir Trevor McDonald, Gordon Brown.

– The Lenny Henry: An "expressive" individual, motivated by recognition, who "loves to be one of the gang" but can seem ill-disciplined and abrasive. They may tell the police "This is an absolute nightmare for me," or "Let's get the party started." Other examples: Jonathan Ross, Paul O'Grady, Dale Winton.

– The Madonna: A "driver" who is motivated by control, and is more interested in the results than in how they are achieved. They may ask police "What details do you need and when?" or "What time frame do we have on this?" Other examples: Lord Sugar, Gordon Ramsay, Baroness Thatcher.

While the training is intended to improve the way officers communicate with the public, and even criminals, critics last night accused forces of "wasting their time learning plodledegook".

guessin You're sendin for the journalist, if so, plz expand

tbh if there actually is a celebrity lookalike, it would benefit the boydem to say "suspect looks like Craig from Big Brother " for example, rather than "IC1 male" and 100s of white males bein stopped.

CPS defends speed gun warning driver prosecution

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has defended a decision to prosecute a driver who flashed his lights to warn motorists of a mobile police speed gun.

Michael Thompson, 64, was pulled by officers in Grimsby in July after warning several oncoming cars.

He was fined £175 after being found guilty of wilfully obstructing a police officer in the course of her duties.

Some have questioned if the prosecution was a waste of resources but the CPS said it was "deemed appropriate".

Thompson, of Augustine Avenue, was also ordered to pay £250 costs and a £15 victim surcharge at the hearing at Grimsby Magistrates' Court.

He claimed he was flashing his headlights merely to try to warn motorists to prevent them braking dangerously when they saw the mobile speed trap.

A CPS spokeswoman said: "Cost is not a consideration in our decision to prosecute.

"When a file is provided to the CPS from the police, it is our duty to decide whether it presents a realistic prospect of conviction and whether a prosecution is in the public interest.

"In accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors a prosecution was deemed appropriate."
