An audience of 8.5 million watched Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg against AC Milan entire, with 7.3 million tuning in for all of ITV1’s coverage from 7.30 to 10.00pm.The viewing figures peaked at 9.7 million and a 39% audience share as a last-minute strike by Wayne Rooney helped the Manchester United to a 3-2 win at Old Trafford. The game was the top performing football match on any channel so far in 2007 and the strong performance helped ITV1 to its best Tuesday audience shares since July 2006 with 22.8% in all-time and 30.2% in peak-time.At 9.30pm, as Rooney scored the winning goal, ITV1’s audience was greater than all the other terrestrial channel’s combined.Next Tuesday ITV1 is showing the second-leg of Liverpool’s semi-final against Chelsea, at Anfield, from 7.30pm.
