While all the rumors so far have indicated that the PSP2 will be about as powerful as PS3, newly leaked specifications for Sony's next portable would seem to indicate that it could be on par with Apple's next iteration of the iPhone and iPad devices.

French tech site 01net has released a set of possible technical specifications for Sony’s PlayStation Portable 2 that were obtained via reliable anonymous sources. The specs reportedly come from a PSP2 Debug unit, so the final hardware could differ, but here’s a rundown of what’s on display.

Screen: 5" OLED multi-touch screen

Control: A Multi-touch trackpad (rumored to be on the rear of the unit), four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, directional pad

Resolution: 960 x 544

CPU: Quad-core ARM Cortex A9

GPU: PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+

RAM: 1GB LPDDR2 in the Debug unit, with 512 MB possible in the retail unit

Storage: 16GB flash internal (like the PSP Go) and an SD slot

Connectivity: Wi-fi, 3G, and Bluetooth

Extras: Accelerometer, GPS, gyroscope, and two cameras: one front-facing and one rear-facing

The system is apparently less broad than the current PSP, but higher, and not pocket-ready. The resolution is exactly four times that of the classic PSP, so emulation of older games may be possible. The report says that we can possibly expect a commercial release in November of this year.

The interesting fact is when combined with another rumor, via AppleInsider, a new picture forms. The AppleInsider rumors, which come from sources that were correct about the chips powering the iPhone 4 and 3GS, say that the next iPad and iPhone devices will use nearly the same CPU & GPU combination as the PSP2. Apple will reportedly use the ARM Cortex A9 and the PowerVR SGX543 MP2, which is a dual-core solution of the same quad-core GPU rumored for the PSP2.

This will put Sony’s next portable on the same hardware footing as Apple’s next product. The iPhone is already host to impressive titles like Infinity Blade, and the shared hardware may make iOS to PSP2 ports a reality, opening up a possible avenue for Sony.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until Thursday for confirmation on the actual system.
