Extra day off in 2012

n order to allow people to properly celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Lord Mandelson has announced that 2012 will see an extra bank holiday being added to the calendar. Tuesday June 5th will be marked as a day of celebrations and because the end of May bank holiday is being moved to June 4th it will mean that people in England will get a four day break from work. It is expected that the assemblies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will also declare the day a bank holiday.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said the decision had been made to give people the extra day off because he knew that the country would want to have the time to reflect on the Queen’s sixty-years on the throne and celebrate all that she has achieved in that time. The Queen has made it clear that she wants her Jubilee to be separate from the London Olympics which kick off a few weeks later. However, she will be taking the opportunity during the celebrations to increase the status of Greenwich in south east London to that of a royal borough.
