The i436 is designed specifically for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch but also supports other phones or tablets with a 3.5mm 4 pole headphone/microphone socket, offering outstanding audio performance for recording and sound calibration. The i436 is a calibrated measurement microphone that complies with the IEC61672 class 2 and ANSI S 1.4 sound level meter standard so can be used in professional applications for acoustic measurement and is also ideal for recording any audio sources.

if it's designed specifically for ipads and tablets in general that means that the quality of the sound is dependent on the built in sound card's A/D convertor, i don't know what the ipad's built in sound card is like but i can't imagine it's top quality.
