FIFA U20 World Cup Colombia 2011

There has been disappointment already for England's youth teams this summer and there are quite a few concerns about the England team going in search of U20 glory later this week. It lacks balance and experience, says Jamie Sanderson.

Following successive exits from the Under-21 European Championships and the Under-17 World Cup, England's Young Lions will hope the forthcoming Under-20 World Cup will prove to be third time lucky in their quest for summer success.

However, Head Coach Brian Eastick goes into the tournament already on the back foot, with a number of Premier League clubs refusing to release many of their top prospects. Even when Eastick did finally confirm his 21-man squad, 9 players were later withdrawn and replaced, leaving England under strength for a tournament that many believe is vital for player development.

Those withdrawals, combined with the altitude and humidity of Columbia, mean England are a 12.0 long shot to leave South America with the trophy. Yet that may not be a bad thing, as expectation and pressure have played key roles in crippling previous campaigns. Life as the rank outsiders may well suit Eastick and his new look Under-20's.

The key to a successful challenge comes in how well the forward line clicks. A lack of fluidity, creativity and ruthlessness in front of goal has punished England's other youth teams this summer, and the Under-20's know they can't afford a repeat of the same. That responsibility lies with forward trio Callum McManaman, Ryan Noble and Matt Phillips, all of whom boast Premier League experience.

Wigan Athletic winger McManaman, a distant relation of former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City star Steve McManaman, earned his place after a break through season in the North West. A productive run for the Reserves led to six first-team appearances all in all, including three starts and a goal in the FA Cup. He'll bring a mix of talents to the party, including guile, energy, an ability to cross and shoot with either foot, as well as a superb work ethic. That could prove to be key late on in the tighter games.

On the other flank, England can mix up their play with Blackpool's quick-silver winger Matt Phillips. The 20-year-old is one of the most experienced in the squad, with almost 100 professional appearances to his name already. Matt played 26 times in the Premier League last season, where he showcased his dangerous mix of power and pace, often as an impact substitute. If he can find some of the end product that he displayed at Wycombe, Phillips can be a deadly weapon out wide.

Sunderland's Ryan Noble should edge out the exciting but rather raw Liverpool striker Michael Ngoo in the battle to lead the line, in a role where much will be expected. Noble is a prolific scorer at Reserve team level, but whether he can transfer that form to the international setup remains to be seen.

Elsewhere, a midfield base of Tottenham's Dean Parrett and Manchester United's Reece Brown looks to be one with promise. Both players will bring tenacity and aggression, but the duo are equally as comfortable in possession and can offer a goal threat from long range.

Other notable mentions go to Aston Villa's Nathan Baker and Manchester City's Reece Wabara, who should form a solid partnership at the back.

Overall, this England Under-20 side are a real mixed bag. Brian Eastick has some good talents at his disposal, but the squad badly lacks depth and experience, summed by the fact 13 of the 21 travelling party have no experience at this level. It's those reasons that make it hard to suggest they can go all the way, but a quarter final place is an attainable target, should they advance from a tricky group which includes 2005 and 2007 winners Argentina. The South Americans are the most successful Under-20 World Cup side in history, and despite being second favourites behind Spain (who are 5.0) this year, they're certainly worth a punt to win it at odds of 6.0.

England open their campaign against the enigma that is Korea DPR on Friday, before facing Mexico and then the aforementioned might of Argentina on the 4th of July. It promises to be another fascinating summer of Three Lions football.
