Newham Council tackles violent crime with cash reward

An east London council is using a cash reward to tackle gun and knife crime in the community.

Newham Council hopes the incentive of at least £150 will encourage people to come forward with information about violent crime in the borough.

Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said it was about making Newham's streets safer.

The Mayor's Reward Scheme is being run jointly with Crimestoppers, which offers rewards of up to £1,000.

Anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction will be offered £150 from the council and, potentially, up to £1,000 from Crimestoppers.

'Capitalise on response'

Sir Robin said: "People die when these weapons are used, that's why we want people to come forward."

He said the joint initiative had been in the planning stage for the past six months.

Sir Robin said they had decided to roll it out after the recent riots to capitalise on the "overwhelming" response they had had in identifying those who took part in the trouble in Newham.

Elizabeth Manning, from Crimestoppers, said: "Crimestoppers recognises that some individuals have personal pressures that may prevent them from being seen to give information.

"The charity provides a way that any individual can come forward, to do the right thing for their conscience and their own community."
