The latest research has found that Google Android has almost 50 per cent market share in the UK smartphone market.

The research , conducted by Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, found Google had a massive 48.3% share with its Android operating system. The second highest smartphone operating system was Blackberry with 21.2% followed closely by Apple iOS with 20.8%.

Overall, smartphone sales account for a massive 68% of all mobile sales and continue to gain more and more share all the time. The growth of the smartphone is bad for Nokia who also saw their Symbian operating system market share drop from 23 per cent down to 6.7%.

Apple's installed user-base was also studied and it was found that O2 still command an impressive 45% of all Apple iPhone customers in the UK. Another good statistic for O2 is that 38% of all its iPhone customers have had their device for over 18 months.

A figure that Apple will be very proud of is that 70 per cent of iPhone owners upgrade to another iPhone. That's quite a brilliant stat and shows just why the iPhone has been so successful.

With the iPhone 5 announcement due today it'll be interesting to see how these figures will look in a years time and whether Android can continue to dominate the smartphone market.
