Palestine voted into Unesco - USA Cancels Funding

The United States is cancelling funding for the UN cultural body Unesco after it voted to grant full membership to the Palestinians.

The motion was passed by a substantial majority, despite strong opposition from the United States and Israel. A US state department spokeswoman said a payment of some $60m (£37m) due next month would not be made. Membership dues paid by the US account for about a fifth of the organisation's annual budget.

This is the first UN agency the Palestinians have sought to join since submitting their bid for recognition to the Security Council in September. The UN Security Council will vote next month on whether to grant the Palestinians full UN membership.

Widespread applause greeted the result of Monday's vote in the chamber - of 173 countries taking part, 107 were in favour, 14 voted against and 52 abstained. Arab states were instrumental in getting the vote passed despite intense opposition from the US.

In an emotional session, China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa voted in favour of Palestinian membership, while the US, Canada and Germany voted against and the UK abstained.

What does this mean for the future of USA?

I mean how can a country who preaches human rights and democracy so much act like babies not getting there own way, very bad move

The BRIC nations are on the rise and America is losing power, UK either needs to ditch America and jump on India's leg or get closer with America and go to Economic war

Also wonder what this means for Israel in 50 years time, these up and coming nations don't seem like they care at all about them

Very intersting

No American politician who wants to remain 'in place' will cross the Israeli lobbyist in washington. Sheer cowardice on their part, from their encounters and general dislike of each other i would imagine Obama would love to tell Netanyahu to fuck off. But knows that would crash and burn his second term.

But it's a sight to see the utter desperation of the US contingent when they are reduced to such obvious blackmail and chicanery. History is leaving them behind, new governments around Israel only rachet up future pressure on them. but it seems the Israeli government would rather go out in a blaze of glory that actually compromise and it seems the US are happy to help them.
