Carl Jenkinson is "flattered" that Arsène Wenger has labelled him the next "David Beckham" and has put his faith in him but he knows he has plenty of work to do to become a regular in the Arsenal first team.

The summer signing from Charlton had yet to play League One football this time last year but he is now holding down a spot at Emirates Stadium following an injury to Bacary Sagna.

Wenger has praised the rate of Jenkinson's improvement in recent months and he demonstrated his trust in the 19-year-old by fielding him against West Bromwich Albion instead of playing a centre back out of position. It didn't go unnoticed.

"It's a very flattering thing for him to do that and believe in me," Jenkinson told Arsenal Player.

"Obviously I'm still young but I do think I am capable of playing. I've got the ability and I have it in me to be playing now - it's just up to me to play well, take my chances and make sure I keep that place.

"It's very nice for him to believe in me and put me in the team in the first place. Obviously over the years he's put faith in youngsters but when it's you, you're that bit more grateful."

Jenkinson has been on a steep learning curve since he crossed the capital in the summer and he is determined to prove that Wenger was right to bring him to the Club.

"There's a lot more improvement for me to do and I know I have a lot more in me to show it," said Jenkinson. "But I know I have to improve if I want to be a regular at this football club. It's nice that he thinks that but I know I have a lot more to do to get where I want to be.

"I think the main thing was that he saw some potential in me at Charlton. I was playing League One football and was only 18 but I was doing quite well. From what they told me I think Arsenal were quite impressed with my athleticism - the fact that I can get up and down the pitch.

"I think they saw that there were many things that I can improve technically but that they could improve when I came here. I think physically they were quite impressed with me but now I'm here I can improve other aspects of my game."

on Carl Jenkinson...

Carl has a stress fracture in his back. That's just about rest now. We discovered that because he had a pain in his back. First you monitor it, then play a little bit and then you check again because you are cautious.

We found a small stress fracture that we noticed at an early stage. If he continued to play it could have got worse and then he could be out for a long time. So at the moment the specialist has decided to rest him.

Jenkinson - I've had my transitional period

By Chris Harris

Carl Jenkinson is convinced he will get "better and better" after making the adjustment to Premier League football.

The 20-year-old was playing in the Conference this time last year while on loan from Charlton Athletic, before leaving the League One club for Arsenal last summer.

Jenkinson had to deal with a steep learning curve after leaping through the divisions and he admits that he needed time to adapt. But as the right back prepares to return from injury, he expects to go from strength to strength.

"I had a transitional stage, you could say, because it takes time to get used to the top level," Jenkinson told Arsenal.com. "That is obviously natural, the quality between the Premier League and League One.

"If you make a mistake in the Premier League, nine times out of 10 you get punished, but I feel like I have adjusted to it now though, in the sense that I had one or two games early doors that I could have done better in. Since then I think I have adjusted to it and shown people what I can do.

"Now I feel that stage for me is over and I'm only going to get better and better."

Jenkinson was an Arsenal fan long before he became an Arsenal player and he met some of his fellow supporters during a members' screening of the Sunderland game at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

"I think that is one thing this club has, fantastic fans," said Jenkinson.

"When you've been injured for a long time it is easy to think you have been forgotten about, but to go out there, do a Q&A and have that response is just fantastic. It really does lift you.

"The last six months have been a dream come true for me because I have always wanted to play at this level, and more importantly, for this football club.

"There have been ups and downs but overall it has been a positive experience for me. I feel that I have learnt so much and have improved as a player, and I feel I'm at the right place to go and push my game to another level."

I like this

As I've said before, now that we are where we are, if we're not going to compete I'd rather a XI of passionate mediocre guys doing an Everton or whatever than flimsy players like Gerv who openly admitted when he first moved here that "Arsenal would be a great learning experience" or whatever, loyalty is a very rare commodity in modern football.
