Eurovision 2012: Tension mounts as final draws near

With only a few hours to go until the Eurovision Song Contest final, the tension is mounting in host nation Azerbaijan.

The morning sun slowly rose over the Caspian, reflecting off the glittering skyscrapers of Baku as anticipation for tonight's Eurovision finale reached fever pitch.

Over 125 million viewers will witness a fierce battle for the top spot between Italy's Nina Zilli and Russia's septuagenarian Buranovski Babuski.

The UK's own senior citizen Engelbert Humperdinck will have to conquer the pressure of performing first, with his ballad 'Love Will Set You Free'.

However, it is Swedish hopeful Loreen who is widely tipped for success. Her song 'Euphoria' can be heard all around Azerbaijan's capital, emanating from taxi radios, cafés and mobile ringtones.

Only more prevalent than the dance track is the omnipresence of police and security. Phalanxes of uniformed officers, suited security and phone-wielding plainclothes police occupy every street corner, particularly centred around Crystal Hall, the venue for tonight's gala event. Many roads are closed, allowing through only official delegation buses and London taxis emblazoned with the Eurovision logo
