Just went back into that corporate environment today after spending the last 3 years freelancing. 60 employees and I'm the ONLY minority in the office, no asians, blacks or other ethnics.
Im getting bombarded with nothing but cat gifs in the work slack chat. Been sitting at my desk with this expression all day....
The ignorance some people have is mad, company recently added a compulsory online course about equality & diversity. If you don't pass you gotta retake it. The amount of people in the office I could hear cursing & moaning at their desks whilst they're struggling on their 2nd/3rd attempt smh.
When I started working in my current company there was two other black people on the floor, floor of about 100 people. One of the two started the same day as me(old African man), the other a black girl in my team. As it was my second corporate environment I felt a lot more comfortable going into it than the first time round*. Every new black person spotted in the office we'd flag it on the office chat 'we got another one'. A few years later I've lost count of the amount of black people in the office, but it'll be around 15-20(5/6 males), but the multichannel team got split out last year with everyone sitting on different floors depending on their roles, so we're all segragated & minorities on our specific floors, but I've got my people to fall back on when I hear pure ignorance.
What's funny is the work drinks we have where at some point in a night the 'realer' ones will come together and be chatting & after a while realise we've segregated ourselves(no more than 6/7 of us).
Some of these girls are wild though one time there were social drinks set up by the social team within the building, just through coincidence there ended up being a group of us together. These girls were waved and they notice the split in a room, we were all laughing these girls start mentioning how they're scared of us, they start holding up black power fists and shit A few shook ones in the group broke off like nah this is too much for me lol.

*me & my manager (old asian guy on the verge of retirement so didn't give a shit) vs 60. Was my first time in an office role full stop so I wasn't sure about how to play it but as he was so laid back he was just himself & made me realise I can be the same as long as I do my job well(which has stuck with me).
the most amount of blax ive seen in a company..... i mean i must have seen around 15 maybe
some i kinda smile at.... and theres some who just pass me....
theres one black guy who sounds white - he sits 4 desks in front of me... when i started coz he was close i used to say 'morning.....' or 'have a good evening......' but his responses just felt dead/frosty - so now when i pass him or grab coffee i just do my ting -
but the other black donnies i try speak to -

Interesting, what are you basing this on?
Guessing it's not the 100s of studies into racial discrimination in recruitment, pay, promotions, social inclusion and the rest in the work place?

I don't think its a case of it being over-thought, its a case of thought being put in the wrong place.
Political correctness is served up because actual equality can't be.

It was okay , driving is long though. Make sure you find out about finishing times and getting your time back. Some companies are sly.
What's the line of work? , IT?
