Recommended Posts

Manchester City footballer Courtney Meppen-Walter and another man have been arrested after two people were killed in a collision.

Police were called to the junction of Bury New Road and Sherborne Street in north Manchester at around 10.15pm on Saturday night after receiving reports of a collision between a red Nissan Micra and a silver Mercedes.

The 32-year-old driver of a red Nissan Micra and the front-seat passenger, a 37-year-old woman, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet released their names.

Two teenagers in the back of the Nissan car were taken to Hope Hospital with serious head injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, believed to be 18-year-old Meppe, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A second man, aged 19, who was driving a grey Volkswagen Golf, was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Meppen-Walter and the other man, who were in separate cars, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in custody for questioning, Greater Manchester Police said.

A spokeswoman for Manchester City Football Club, said: "It is a devastating tragedy for this family and also for the Greater Manchester community at large.

"The club offers its heartfelt condolences to the family and all affected by the events of yesterday evening.

"The situation is subject to an extensive investigation by Greater Manchester Police and therefore we are unable to make specific comment on the incident itself at this time."

Defender Meppen-Walter has been with Manchester City since 2003 but is yet to play for the first team.

Courtney Meppen-Walter is from my area.

I was driving home last night down Bury New Road and the road was completely shut off. Couldn't really tell what had happened until I read the news this morning.
