A young clubber was stabbed to death inside a nightclub in the early hours of this morning.

A 20-year-old was stabbed to death at a student party attended by hundreds of undergraduates at a nightclub in south London.

The man was knifed at Oceana in Kingston in the early hours of this morning while the venue was hosting a Fuzzy Logic student night which is billed as “the UK’s biggest student night”.

A witness said the victim was stabbed in the queue for the cloakroom near to closing time during a foam party at the 2,000-capacity venue popular with students from Kingston and Roehampton universities.

Police were called to the club in Kingston town centre shortly before 3.30am after reports of a stabbing. The 20-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance but died on route.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held in custody at a south London police station.

A friend of the victim, who was not in the club himself but learned of the stabbing from mutual friends on Twitter this morning, said he was shocked at the news.

He identified the victim only by his first name as Jamie from Southall, west London, adding he was a “good person, very fun to be with, yet serious when it came down to it. He would always help his own”.

DJ Calvin Harris and Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman have performed at previous Fuzzy Logic nights and the club hosted a packed freshers party last Wednesday.

Students have expressed surprise that anybody was able to enter the club with a knife as the venue is known for its airport-style security measures with revellers having to pass through metal detectors.

Kingston police announced in March that incidents at the club had dropped by 40 per cent under new management after a troubled history.

Detective Chief Superintendent Martin Greenslade hailed the improved security after the number of crimes inside the club decreased from 254 in 2010 to 158 in 2011.

The club was closed today and management was unavailable for comment.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed the details of the stabbing.

He said: “Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and a man, believed to be aged 20, was taken to hospital having been stabbed. Unfortunately he died while en route there. The Homicide and Serious Crime Command has been informed.”

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
