We didn't think it was possible, but Oprah Winfrey has been dethroned as the richest black woman in the world. The new leading lady is oil baroness Folorunsho Alakija from Nigeria.

While drilling oil has reportedly made the 61-year-old owner of FAMFA Oil Limited a very rich woman -- she is estimated to be worth at least $3.2 billion -- Alakija started her ascent to financial supremacy in fashion.

Born into a wealthy family, Alakija studied fashion design in England back in the '80s and soon after founded the Nigerian clothing label Supreme Stitches. Her one-of-a-kind creations were worn by the who's who of African society, quickly making her the premier fashion designer in the West African country. In fact, she has been called one of the "pioneers of Nigerian fashion" and stays connected to the industry through the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FDAN).

The well-heeled businesswoman and philanthropist made the switch to oil in 1993 and the rest is history. From the images we were able to dig up of Alakija, she is quite the fashion plate (read: eccentric dresser). But when you've out-earned the Queen of All Media by approximately $500 million, you're allowed to wear whatever you want.

Ventures Africa reports that Alakija owns at least $100 million in real estate and a $46 million private jet. And can you imagine what her closets look like? Move over,Imelda Marcos!

Anyone who has made billions in the Nigerian oil sector is a crook of the highest order, and should not be celebrated.

She was a seamstress to Maryam Babangida (the former First Lady of Nigeria,) and was later given an oil bloc, which explains her great wealth.

lol@ the daemonz who negged the op and possed you. there are very few, if any clean billionaires in this world.....from abramovich, to jobs, to gates, to name a few. if a seamstress I.E. FRIGGING CLOTHMAKER...can go from that to being a billionaire..she was born a seamstress just waiting for this big break.....cos if her name was shaqana she wouldve been content with copping a 5 series and 'stunting' on her friends.....so piss off with your trying to dismiss such new money...when your country is far more corrupt. f*ck*ng dufus

and thats not to say they arent crooks or nigeria isnt corrupt. but its better they eat of their own resources than have some daemon c*nt come in and teef it for them. after all, the other nigerians who bought oil bloc licences were too slavish still assuming that its only whitey that can eat off Africa so they sold their licences to whites and lebanese...this lady said no and stuck at it. if she was british she would be minister for women affairs, or at least a big donor to one of the useless parties.

You are such a useless, unthinking f*ggot.

I am nigerian, and as such my concern lies with the Nigerian citizenry.

Of course, all of those Russian Oligarchs are corrupt, but this topic is not about Abramaovich but the aformentioned Mrs. Alakija.

You a clearly an ignorant pr*ck. Do you know how this woman became a billionaire before you started typing nonsense. She was given an oil block as a personal gift, because of her personal connections to the former military dictator of Nigeria.

She was given an oil bloc practically for free, she signs an agreement with an international oil firm (or 'daemons' as you like to call them) to explore it and in return she smiles to the bank with billions of dollars!. What is admirable about that??? Did she work hard and tirelessly for her billions like Oprah, Gates and Jobs? NO! What is laudable about her story? Imagine a film made about Oprah. Now imagine a film made about Mrs. Alakija: an evil dictator doesn't know who else to parcel out Nigeria's oil wealth to, so he asks his wife, she suggests her seamstress, after all she's made some really good outfits for her over the years and occasionally they like to have a laugh over some fufu. Voila, just like that she becomes extremely rich woman.

In what way has her endeavours improved the lifes of ordinary nigerians?

Imagine David Cameron's wife's stylist being given an oil bloc in the North Sea worth billions for practically nothing - Can you see how ridiculous that sounds?

Niger Deltans have not seen any economic benefit from oil that has been lifted from their land; they live in extreme poverty, and their land, livelihood and environment have been ravaged by rapacious oil companies. If it were not corrupt individuals like Mrs. Alakija, they would be no reason why Nigeria couldn't have been an African Qatar or Norway.

You are so blinkered - you can only see things in terms of race. You always fail to call a spade a spade and call out corruption for what it is. Is it any comfort to the ordinary nigerian, that his oppressor is black? Also this new moneyed class has no interest in investing their ill-gotten gains in Nigeria. Nobody pays any taxes. Most of the money made from these indigenous oil companies end up in 'daemon' tax havens like the isle of man. They hoard their cash and would rather invest abroad than at home. They don't want to improve their country in anyway shape or form.

Nigerian leaders since independence have managed to brutalise, terrorise and oppress its populace with such vigour, that it is of little wonder that many Nigerians wouldn't mind if Nigeria became a crown colony.

People rate businessmen like Jobs and Gates, because they were visionary business leaders who transformed not only their industries but the world. Gates made personal computing much more accessible to the average person. And imagine the world without itunes, iphones, macbooks, ipads etc etc.

Most people do not rate people just for being rich. But the businessmen who are most admired are people who have a compelling story; the Bransons, the Dells etc. and have impacted the common man in one way or another. People who have put in the work and have reaped the rewards. In what way should she be even be talked of in the same breath as Oprah? What sane person cites Russian Oligarchs, or Arab princes as inspirations.

Black people should stop celebrating mediocrity, because that is exactly what this woman is.

How can you be proud of someone who is obviously a crook, but it's OK because she is black, and we don't have enough black billionaires, and when you see white people you can boast that a certain Mrs. Alakija is the richest black woman in the world, only for the white people to retort that the richest woman in the world (Gina rinehart, who is white) is worth nearly ten times as much, and is pretty much reviled in her own country.

I would much rather prefer to see a black person succeed and be talked of on the same level as Jobs and Gates and Branson, than settle for a mediocrity who got rich without any hard work, or ingenuity.
