Microsoft confirms Office 2013 licenses can't be transferred to other computers

office-2013.jpg

It's no secret that copies of Office 2013 bind themselves to a single computer, but Microsoft has now confirmed to Computerworld that the software's license can't bereassigned to another PC, as is possible with Office 2010. When asked whether a license could be transferred to another machine if the original rig was destroyed, lost or stolen, Microsoft replied with a frosty, "No comment." However, Redmond did mention that the productivity suite could be reinstalled on the same PC after a crash. Just how Ballmer and Co. will enforce the policy remains a bit murky, but it's pretty clear they hope folks who have a penchant for switching up computing environments will be enticed by an Office 365 subscription.

World's first 3D printing pen smashes Kickstarter goal in a few hours

7b229ee83e80ae2d2ee950c653e91e21_large.j

3D printers are getting smaller and cheaper all the time, but they're still not exactly mainstream. The 3Doodler is an attempt to change that — it's a small pen-style device that its creators call both a "world's first" and "the most affordable way to 3D print." It won't be able to print pre-rolled objects such as Nokia phone cases, of course, but instead lets you draw your designs into existence by moving it through the air. Like many 3D printers, the 3Doodler uses ABS plastic that is heated and instantly cooled.

WobbleWorks launched the project earlier today on Kickstarter, and shot past its $30,000 funding goal within a few hours; at the time of writing, it's raised close to ten times that amount. The first orders are scheduled to ship in September, though there only looks to be enough stock for around 5,000 Kickstarter backers in total. Right now, you can order your own 3Doodler for $75 and it should be with you in October.

idea is good, but maybe its the guy in that vid, the printed stuff looks crap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1uyQZNg2vE   Google Glass features unveiled in preview video

_65979506_65979505.jpg Wearable technology is expected to be a major growth area for hardware makers

Fresh details about Google's eagerly-anticipated smart glasses have been released by the company.

A YouTube video uploaded by the company shows Google Glass in action - including the interface which appears in the wearer's line of sight.

The search giant has also opened up the trial of the product to "creative individuals" and developers.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was recently spotted on New York's subway testing the device.

The product was first unveiled as part of a

where developers were offered early access to the device for $1,500.

The company is now inviting people in the US to use the hashtag #ifihadglass to suggest ways they would make use of the headset.

"We're looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass," Google said.

_65979992_65979991.jpg It will be possible to take pictures from the perspective of the person wearing the device

"We're still in the early stages and, while we can't promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting."

'OK, Glass'

The demo video showed how Glass can be used to take pictures and record video, as well as share content directly via email or social networks.

Voice commands such as "OK, Glass, take a picture" were used to control the device.

Other features appeared to include Skype-like video chats, and other related information such as weather reports and map directions.

All of this information appeared in a small, translucent square in the top right of the wearer's field of vision.

The display is considerably less intrusive than

.

Wearable technology is seen as a major growth area for hardware makers in 2013 and beyond.

In 2008, Apple patented a laser-based "head mounted display system" that it suggested could stream video from its iPod, among other features.

Other patents obtained by Sony and Microsoft allow for creation of miniature displays to go over users' eyes.

Oakley recently launched Airwave - ski goggles with built-in sensors which provide information on an in-built screen about an owner's speed, the size of their jumps and what music they are listening to.

Away from the head, the newly released Pebble watch links directly to a smartphone - a concept Apple is also rumoured to be working on.

PayPal Here coming to the UK with a chip reader to match (video)

paypal-here-uk-1361496686.jpg

US-born mobile payment methods like PayPal Here and Square haven't had much traction in Europe, due in no small part to the continent's frequent reliance on chip-and-PIN credit cards over North America's (slowly outgoing) magnetic stripes. PayPal is getting around that technical barrier through the most direct method possible -- replacing the reader altogether. PayPal Here's UK deployment swaps out the triangular US reader for a considerably bulkier Bluetooth peripheral that takes the newer payment method. Other elements will be familiar to anyone who's used Here on an Android or iOS device in another country, minus the obligatory changes in currency. PayPal is partnering with a handful of UK businesses before launching Here on a wider scale in the summer -- not soon enough for some, but it might save a few Brits from scrounging through their wallets just to buy some ice cream.

Qualcomm outs global LTE chip, claims a world first

Global flavors of LTE bands can be a hassle for travelers and firms making multiple versions of the same device, but Qualcomm says its solved that quandary with a new radio chipset. Dubbed the RF360, the silicon is hailed as the world's first mobile chip that packs support for global LTE, which translates to connectivity for LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, WCDMA, EV-DO, CDMA 1x, TD-SCDMA and GSM / EDGE -- breaking down the barriers separating roughly 40 different LTE bands. Not only does it lend globetrotters a hand, but Qualcomm claims the component carries a few other "world's first" features that allow manufacturers to build thinner products with improved antenna performance, battery life and connection reliability. The outfit also unveiled the WTR1625L chip, which stakes claim to an industry first by sporting carrier aggregation alongside international LTE compatibility. Hardware made with the RF360 isn't expected to arrive on shelves until the latter half of 2013, but for now you can mosey past the break for the nitty gritty details and a video to walk you through them.

StickNFind Bluetooth tracking stickers to ship next week, get extended range

sticknfind.jpg

StickNFind managed to raise a grand total of $931,970 through IndieGoGo since wefirst caught up with it, and now it's set to start shipping next week. In case your memory requires a bit of jogging, the quarter-sized disc can help you hunt down whatever it's attached to thanks to a smartphone app that keeps tabs on its distance via Bluetooth. Mobile World Congress also brings news that the miniature homing tags have gotten a redesigned companion application, an extended range of up to 150 feet (ratcheted up by 50) and a tracking accuracy of within two inches. StickNFind is being geared up for an arrival on retail shelves this April, but there's still no word regarding which shops will carry it.

It's not for tracking stolen phones etc. It's more for people that always misplace keys/remote in the yard. It also has some leash feature, say you stuck one on your wallet, you can make your phone ring if your wallet is a certain distance away from you.
