Five young internationals sign new contracts

 

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that five of its young internationals have today signed new long-term contracts.

The quintet of Kieran Gibbs (23), Carl Jenkinson (20), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (19), Aaron Ramsey (21) and Jack Wilshere (20), who are all full internationals, and between them have already made more than 350 first-team appearances for the Gunners, have all committed their long-term futures to Arsenal.

All five players who have signed new deals represent British countries. Midfielder Ramsey has made the most appearances for his country, playing 24 times and also captaining the Wales national team. The other four players who have put pen to paper on new deals, are all full England internationals. Defender Jenkinson is the most recent to win his first cap, making his full England debut in November in the friendly international in Sweden. Defender Gibbs was a regular under-21 international and has now won two England caps, with midfielder Wilshere representing the Three Lions on nine occasions.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted that these five young players have all signed new long-term contracts. The plan is to build a team around a strong basis of young players, in order to get them to develop their talent at the Club. Jack is certainly the best known, the leader of this group - but the other four players are exceptional footballers, and we’re very happy that we could conclude their new deals at the same time.

Wenger continued: “Gibbs, Jenkinson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey and Wilshere represent a core of the squad and it’s an extension for a long period for all of them. I’m a strong believer in stability and I believe when you have a core of British players, it’s always easier to keep them together and that’s what we’ll try to achieve going forward.”

As an attempt to recreate history, Arsene Wenger’s plan to use a “good core of young English players” as the basis of a winning team is only mildly convincing. But it does at least genuflect to the strength of his inheritance in 1996.

 

George Graham had won titles at Arsenal in 1989 and 1991 with first a home-reared core — Tony Adams, David Rocastle, Paul Davis, Michael Thomas — and then an influx of excellent indigenous buys such as David Seaman, Alan Smith, Steve Bould, Lee Dixon and Nigel Winterburn.

 

Wenger developed that with imports of an even higher standard and, if he wants to roll the clock back, then he’ll have to do it again.

 

Of the six young players Wenger hopes will sign up soon, only Jack Wilshere could have been safely tossed in among the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.

 

As a proud Wales international and former captain of his country, Aaron Ramsey might understandably bridle at the description “English” but neither he nor Theo Walcott could complain if their credentials for the very highest class were questioned.

 

Carl Jenkinson and Kieran Gibbs might make the finest full-back partnership in the country and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a more than worthy partner for Wayne Rooney in the England attack, so there is genuine potential to be realised.

 

Ramsey and Walcott also have a bit of time on their side. But a strategy involving so many ifs and buts is incomplete.

 

Wenger must still buy, and buy either very big or with the astuteness of old.

 

He must find his new Vieira to accompany Wilshere in running the show, his new Henry to bring the curtain down on slain opponents.

 

Where he will find them in a midwinter window is another matter. Expect a few more months of tension at the Emirates.

The two full backs average at best, wouldn't look outta place at Reading tbh

Ramsey..will he ever realise his potentia? has only looked a player for wales (big fish small pond)

Chambo lol this kid has already been found out, not as good as every1 thinks

Jack, again let's see how he develops

Not too encouraged, imo bar jack there's nothing there to build a team around, Arsene needs to go back to europe and back to that ivorian academy or bag some french affs

Taarabt must be signed and given the #10 he's betta than Wilshere, Chambo and Ramsey put together..
