The end of men? Scientist predicts male extinction in five million years

A biology professor has predicted that men will be extinct within five million years due to the ‘inherent fragility’ of the male sex chromosome.

Jenny Graves, who has made similar claims in the past, said the Y chromosome was on a ‘downward spiral’.

In a talk to the Australian Academy of Science, Prof Graves said while the female X chromosome, of which all girls and women have two, had 1,000 or so genes, the Y chromosome, which men only have one of, had been left with around 100 genes dubbed as mainly ‘junk’.

‘It’s a lovely example of what I call dumb design. It’s an evolutionary accident,’ she said.

‘The X chromosome is all alone in the male but in the female it has a friend, so it can swop bits and repair itself. If the Y gets hit, it’s a downward spiral.’

The professor, of the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra, added to her audience: ‘It is very bad news for all the men here.’
