A family of five set themselves on fire in a desperate final protest against the demolition of their home.

Bharat Mansingh, 40, died in a hospital after setting himself on fire in the city of Rajkot in north west India. Three of his females relatives, Rekha, Asha, Vasumati and one male relative Girish Mansingh were all taken to hospital with severe burns.

 

 

 

 

Two are said to be in a critical condition. It’s believed the horrendous act stems from a long-running dispute between families living on a common plot in the Chotu Nagar areas of the city.

 

 

 

The Mansingh family, who are understood to be Nepalese immigrants, believed the Rajkot Municipal Corporation was going to demolish their home and came to discuss the situation with city officials. When they failed to get satisfactory answers they doused themselves in kerosene and set themselves alight as helpless passers-by looked on.

 

Emergency services managed to douse the flames and all five were taken to Rajkot Civil Hospital where 40-year-old Bharat Mansingh later died. Police Commissioner H P Singh said the family were in a dispute with the Chotu Nagar Cooperative Housing Society, who they believed was planning to evict them.

 

 

Bharat Mansingh died while undergoing treatment while the other four have sustained severe burns,’ Commissioner Singh said.
The family, who had been living in their house for several years, believed that it has been condemned as an unauthorized structure.
The co-operative later denied they planned to evict the family and said they had no plans to demolish the house.

 

 

 

The news has quickly become a political issue in India with the opposition party accusing the Rajkot Municipal Corporation of having harassed the family. There were calls for a bandh, or general strike, to protest their treatment across Rajkot on Thursday.

And if it come to it, and they felt they had no other choice and believed it would become a catalyst to change, im pretty sure they would have done it

 

These people have no other choices, they get no publicity, no public support, no funding, cant afford lawyers, only way they can fight their ongoing cause against oppression is unfortunately fighting their oppressor like this 

 

We wouldn't be discuss this if he had chained himself to a tree or went on a hunger diet or looted a few shops

Difference is they didn't die for black people . They  got assasinated which they had no choice in .

So you're gonna compare 3 famous activists - fighting for an entire race's rights - who were assassinated, to a family who set themselves alight because they were being evicted by their housing society.

 

And those activists didn't die for black people, they lived for them. Are you trying to say their deaths accomplished more than their lives did?

 

 

And these Nepalese family, in their sacrifice what are we really discussing? We're not discussing "oh their governments/corporations are f*cked up over there" - we're discussing the idea of people setting themselves alight.

 

And who are you to say that the only way to fight their oppressor is to harm themselves?

Besides the point really but them activist knew they would be killed doing what they did leaving young families.

 

They knew full well, brother Martin even said "I may not get there with you".
