I use to go when I was in school. I don't really find it any useful.
My doctor refereed me to a psychotherapist have not tried it out yet but was told they are very good. bit pricey though £30 a session (1 hour)

One of my friends went to see one after a number of life changing events and said she found it very helpful for coping mechanisms.

I never been to one, or known anybody to but i have always been under the impression that there success isn't due to any skills they have, just them being an unbias open ear and shoulder to cry on

I went to one down Harley street with the escort girl, hearing shit from her child hood made me feel like I needed a session myself after. I understood her better though which is I guess why she wanted me there.
Silly girl never kept to her therapy though, fuck knows where she'll end up.

I was made to go when my Brother passed but it was bullshit.
I guess it works for certain people, primarily because you are forced to talk about things that are bothering you instead of blocking it out and letting it affect your life in other avenues.
My Cousin in currently in counselling, nothing major has ever happened to her but she found herself in a very low place and its helping her realise how and why she got there.

Never been, never known anyone that has, well if they have they haven't told me.
If its like it is on television, then nah I'll never go.

Tried to bring it up a couple times to my dad to convince him to go (pretty sure he still has symptoms of PTSD) but he never took it seriously/got pissed at me
Can't really imagine him sitting opening up to somebody about his life though so dunno why I bothered

All depends on the individual definitely works for some people will do nothing for others.
When all else is failing its probably a good option to have. The comment about the unbiased ear and strong non- judgemental shoulder to cry on sounds right.
