The 2014 Formula One season will be the 65th season of the Formula One World Championship, a motor racing championship for Formula One cars which is recognised by the sport's governing body, theFédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), as the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars. Eleven teams and twenty-two drivers will compete in nineteen Grands Prix for the World Drivers' and World Constructors' Championships.

In 2014, the championship will see the introduction of a revised engine formula, in which the 2.4 litre V8 engine configuration—previously used between 2006 and 2013—will be replaced with a new formula specifying a 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engine that incorporates an energy recovery system into its build.[1] The 2014 calendar will feature substantial revisions from the 2013 season. The Russian Grand Prixwill be held for the first time at the Sochi International Street Circuit in Sochi,[2] and the Austrian Grand Prix will be revived, with the race to be held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.[3] The Indian Grand Prixwill be discontinued for one year ahead of a move to an early-season date in 2015,[4] whilst the Korean Grand Prix has been removed from the schedule entirely.[5]

Sebastian Vettel will start the season as the defending Drivers' Champion after securing his fourth consecutive title at the 2013 Indian Grand Prix. His team, Red Bull Racing, will start the season as the defendingConstructors' Champions, having also won their fourth consecutive championship in India.[6]

Eric Boullier has ditched Lotus to take over as team principal at McLaren. The move is awaiting confirmation but it is widely thought that the Frenchman has been picked by Ron Dennis, the McLaren chief executive, to take over from Martin Whitmarsh.

Speculation was triggered as soon as Lotus issued a statement this morning, two hours before the official online launch of McLaren’s new car for 2014. It was known that Whitmarsh had been relieved of his duties as chief executive by Dennis, who took over last week, but Boullier was the outsider’s choice as team principal. Not for Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One’s wily chief executive, who has long touted Boullier as the team principal who got “the best bang for the buck”.

Gerard Lopez will combine his duties as board member at Lotus with the job of team principal but he will struggle to replace Boullier, who has worked wonders on a shoestring at Lotus.

Lopez said in a statement: “Lotus F1 Team has never stood still and we head into what promises to be an exciting 2014 season with an innovative new car, new partners and a new management structure at Enstone. Great things have been achieved over the past years and we need to continue this momentum. We thank Eric for all his hard work over the past four years and we are confident we can continue to fight as one of the top teams in Formula One over the seasons ahead.”

The timing of the Lotus announcement was greeted as a signal that Boullier was on the move with McLaren due to hold their online launch for the new season later in the day.

Whitmarsh is out in the cold after the worst season in the team’s history, which included finishing behind Lotus in the constructors’ championship despite having a massively bigger budget. After four years at the helm, Whitmarsh found himself replaced by Ron Dennis and it is expected his departure will be confirmed later. Whitmarsh has not been seen around the McLaren factory since the announcement that Dennis was moving back into the hot seat in overall control of both the factory and the Formula One team.

With money tight, Boullier has seen Lotus take victories in both of the last two seasons as well as challenging the top three of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. Bringing Kimi Raikkonen back from enforced retirement also proved to be a stroke of genius.

Unfortunately, the money was always an issue with Raikkonen still unpaid and deals to bring in fresh investment falling by the wayside. Lotus will also miss the upcoming first pre-season test in Jerez next week, setting alarm bells ringing that this could be a more difficult financial year still.

Williams have confirmed Felipe Massa's former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley has joined him at the team – but in a different capacity.

Smedley has taken on the new role of head of vehicle performance which will combine trackside work with car development responsibilities.

Williams also announced the hiring of Richard Lockwood from Marussia, who will be head of race strategy alongside current strategist Randeep Singh.

Andrew Murdoch will serve as race engineer to Massa while Jonathan Eddolls will continue to work with Valtteri Bottas.

Chief technical officer Pat Symonds said: “these new appointments reflect how high our ambitions are”.

“We have a number of senior people joining us to assist us in the pursuit of those ambitions and I am extremely excited to welcome them on-board. 2014 gives us the biggest change to the technical regulations that I have seen in my career, and so it will be important to add further depth to the talent we already have here as we head into the new season.”
