Microsoft names Satya Nadella to replace Steve Ballmer

Technology giant Microsoft has announced that Satya Nadella will be its next chief executive.

Indian-born Mr Nadella is currently Microsoft's head of Cloud and Enterprise, which builds and runs the firm's computing platforms and developer tools.

He takes over from Steve Ballmer who announced plans to step down last year.

Company founder Bill Gates said there was "no better person to lead Microsoft".

Nadella was paid $7.67 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, according to compensation research firm Equilar Inc., which examines corporate filings. Nadella also had 454,062 shares of unvested stock valued at $15.7 million as of that date

As part of the CEO transition at Microsoft, via which Satya Nadella is taking over as the company's third CEO effective immediately, one of Microsoft's current board members, John Thompson is simultaneously taking on the role of Microsoft board chairman.

Thompson is replacing Gates as board chairman. Gates is remaining on the Microsoft board. Ex-CEO Steve Ballmer is staying on the board as well, a spokesperson confirmed.

According to Forbes Thompson is the 8th highest compensated CEO at $71.84M/year and only African American leading a major technology company
