Mum of Sophie Jones releases harrowing picture showing toll cervical cancer took on teenager's body

The 19-year-old lost her battle with the disease on Saturday - after being refused a smear test because she was "too young"

This shocking picture shows 19-year-old Sophie Jones before she died from cervical cancer - having been refused a smear test because she was "too young".

The aspiring model had been told she was not old enough to have a test for the disease that would go on to drain the life from her.

Now Sophie's mum Peri Cawley has decided to release this harrowing photo in a bid to draw attention to the horrific ordeal her daughter suffered - in the hope that no other young women will suffer a similar fate again.

“The word choice in the campaign means that people should have just that – a choice," she said.

"If a girl presents at a doctor’s with symptoms she should be given the pros and cons of being tested.”

“We’ve been criticised for releasing the photo of Sophie in hospital, but we sat down as a family and discussed it first. We wanted people to see just how hard it hit her.

“We just wanted to show that normal families do get hit by this sort of thing. It does happen, no matter how rare it is, and a young girl shouldn’t be dismissed automatically when she asks to be tested.”

Merseyside MPs have joined calls for action in the wake of Sophie's death.

Labour MP Alison McGovern, who represents the South Wirral constituency Sophie was from, has backed a debate on cervical screening after a petition in her memory was signed more than 160,000 times.

And Shadow Public Health Minister Luciana Berger said steps must be taken to make sure nobody suffered like Sophie again.

The 19-year-old was told she could not be screened for cervical cancer because the lower age limit for routine testing is 25, and she was instead diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.

But the cancer was confirmed after she was admitted to hospital when her condition worsened, by which time it had spread to other parts of her body.

She died four months later.

Her family and friends now want to make sure girls of all ages are offered the choice of a smear test,  to make sure nobody suffers the same fate as Sophie.

The  petition needed 100,000 signatures and support from at least one MP  before it could be discussed in Parliament, and now Ms McGovern has said she will help the family’s efforts.

After she heard of the horrible ordeal Sophie and her family had been through she said she wanted to make sure the government was doing enough to protect young girls.

She said: “I’m so awfully sorry for the loss for her family and friends, and there’s a clear outpouring of what a wonderful person she was. It’s such a horrible thing to happen.

“But hopefully there can be a good thing that comes out of something so terrible.”

She added: “We need a better understanding of what exactly went wrong here. I have raised the issue with the government minister responsible.

“We need to check that we have the right policies in place, to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again.”

Luciana Berger said: “Women can have a cervical smear test at any age if their doctor thinks it’s necessary to help in diagnosis, so we must understand what went wrong in this case to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.”

They both said they would be meeting with Sophie’s family to see how they could help.

A Department of Health spokesperson said: “This is a tragic case. The issue was last debated in Parliament in 2009, but the best independent evidence still shows that routine screening of women under 25 does more harm than good.

“Cervical cancer in women under 25s is extremely rare. In 2011, there were 47 cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 and no deaths. “

Got nothing against this no makeup thing, if it's getting people to donate to a good cause.

Horrible horrible disease, family friend of mine caught it three years back, recently decided to stop taking medication.

Saw him a few weeks back and then again on Wednesday, the change was drastic, just skin and bone.

I am all for awareness of any kind. Especially our generation. Its like someone knows someone that's atleast got it or passed away from it.

It a sad disease. wouldn't even curse my worst enemy .

Its becoming quite common. They say 1 in 5.

We need more awareness without a doubt

Fuckin deams ultimate de-population tool

Why was it not rife 100 years ago?

It's something to do within the food, household cleaning items, plastic bottle or something else the deams introduced

All these adverts begging for money that ain't doing shit to stem it but just suck money from vunerable people

Why they not investigate the reasons for the increase from years ago and is it to do with what we consume/use

We all need to pressure these deams and ask what is the root cause
