is the winner's curse getting stronger ???

brazil won in 94 and blew teams away in 98 with the worlds best player.... but then before the final he has a convulsion and plays like the space jam aliens took his powers.... they lose

france won in 98 and then lost the opener to newcomers senegal in 2002, before failing to win a single game and going out in the group stages with their star man unavailable till the final game

brazil won in 02 and were given an easy ride in 06 but made tough work of easy opposition before getting dumped out the competition by france, brazil never looked like winning and were pretty much a one man team at the time...that 1 man the best player in the world at the time fell off so badly during and after this tournament that it seems as the curse is just for him

italy won in 06 and failed to get out the group in 2010, they actually came bottom of a group with slovakia and new zealand in it.... did not win a single game

spain won in 2010 and unlike previous winners were given a tough group to retain their crown... got smashed in the opening game of the world cup 1-5, there is still time for them to put an end to this curse but it seems the curse is getting stronger and stronger

Think Spain will still go through, yesterday reminded me of Spurs   after that RVP goal their heads just fell.  Spain lost their opening game last tournament as well didn't they?  Although that -4 might come back to hurt them.

If they do get through, we'll see Brazil vs Spain 2nd round!

Crazy how Spain went so early with the quality of their squad (on paper)

They didn't look on it at all, they had a good run though was unlikely they were gonna win again.

Casillas has gone awol, will be surprised if madrid don't get rid of him

Mentally, international teams can only perform at top levels for 2-3 years. Spain did something unprecedented & did it for 4 years.

Dont agree with this

Spain could have gone on longer if the team had evolved, gone for a younger more energetic manager, built the team around players like Koke, Thiago, Isco, Llornte etc

Why Fergie kept us strong for so long, just need to constantly evolve and not let your own success be your downfall, obviously its more difficult because you cant sign new players, but Spain still thought slow tempo possession and passing football would still be enough to beat any higher tempo football

More down to tactical inflexibility and ignorance imo

Are you implying that high tempo football >>>> slow possession football?

I agree with you on the point of Spain not evolving, not taking into account mental & physical exhaustion of a lot of their players.

And yes, tactically they should have evolved. Using the same personnel & system as the one you did 4 years ago is hard.

However, unlike club management, you're not with the same players 5 days out of 7, forming relationships between coach/player & player/player, building that squad dynamic which gives you success over a period of time.

There is nothing wrong with their philosophy of play, it's just in its execution.

The Confederations Cup final should have been a wake up call

The last U21 Euros showed that there was young Spanish players ready to step up

Torres being the 2nd choice striker is hilarious

An U21 tourny showed they're ready for the senior side? You really really are clueless

No Xavi  = No Spain

Like I've been saying all along he was the main man of that side

U-21 team tore that tournament apart. Some of those players even went on playing important roles for their clubs in CL. Main guy won the CL this year :)

Xavi was poor but Xabi was worse.
