Hugely popular Belgium fan goes viral, earns modelling contract

The World Cup was meant to be a shop window for Belgium’s young stars to showcase their abilities to the globe’s top clubs.

Instead, a Belgium fan deflected the attention away from the pitch as she donned the red, yellow and black to support her nation against Russia during the group stage.

Snaps of Axelle Despiegelaere flooded the internet as hoards of social media users coveted her beauty - prompting French cosmetics company L’Oreal to make an approach for the 17-year-old during the summer transfer window.

On Tuesday, Axelle announced on her Facebook page that she had penned a deal with the company and revealed she had already filmed a promotional video for the brand.

Belgium crashed out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals, but it’s unlikely the model will be too disappointed given her new found fame.

and in the words of DJ Drama " and like that..........we gone"

It is claimed Despiegelaere received criticism on the page for this picture which she allegedly uploaded on July 1.
The teenager reportedly added the caption: “Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It’s much more important than that..this was about 1 year ago…ready to hunt Americans today haha.”

The post was apparently uploaded the day Belgium took on the U.S. in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Screengrabs appear to show Despiegelaere apologising on Wednesday, saying: “I didn’t mean to offend anyone… it was a joke. Thanks for understanding.”

By Thursday her Facebook account was down.

And now L’Oreal has told BuzzFeed the company is no longer working with the teenager.

A spokesperson said:

Axelle de Spiegelaere is not one of L’Oréal Professionnel’s spokespeople.

L’Oréal Professionnel Belgium collaborated with her on an ad hoc basis to produce a video for social media use in Belgium.

This has now been produced.

The 17-year-old does not appear to have commented on the controversy or rejoined Facebook, although a fan page still exists.
