The British are doing well, don't be fooled. We won the war with the Yanks (well they won it with the Russians, but still) and we smashed the shit out of various post-independence neo-Colonial projects. The other former Imperial powers had flopped two wars and couldn't afford the Imperial upkeep.

 

We fought in two wars, sort of won both and still couldn't afford to keep up the Empire. So we let our dependencies 'free' - on a very short leash. That is neo-Colonialism in essence.

British/American companies had first dibs in most of the post-WWII/post-Independence landscape. Even though Britain had to formally declare an end to the Overseas Territories, there was a de-facto understanding that the business arrangements would carry on.

 

France is still kinda on it too. Even Italy slyly. America is letting everyone get a little cut. Follow the Imperial thread back through these 'Arab Spring' countries and you'll see there's a neo-Colonial element to it.
