Anderson has flown to Brazil to complete his proposed move to Internacional.
The Manchester United midfielder has been in talks over a return to his homeland after accepting he has no future at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old Brazilian is out of contract at the end of the season and does not figure in Louis van Gaal's plans.
He flew out to Porto Alegre on Saturday to undergo a medical ahead of his unveiling on Monday.
United have been keen to find Anderson a new club during this transfer window - but were also prepared to let him run down his deal at Old Trafford.
His departure brings an end to a frustrating seven-and-a-half years in the Premier League.
He was likened to Ronaldinho in Brazil, while Ferguson's brother and United scout, Martin, made the bold claim that he had more natural talent than Wayne Rooney.
Ferguson recounted the episode in his autobiography:
"I sent Martin to watch him in every game for four or five weeks," he wrote. "Martin said: 'Alex, he’s better than Rooney.'
"'For Christ’s sake, don’t say that,' I told him. 'He’ll need to be good to be better than Rooney.'
"Martin was adamant."
Anderson has only shown rare glimpses of the talent that saw him regarded so highly as a teenager.
Standout performances in his first season - contributing to United's Premier League and Champions League triumph in 2008 - proved to be the highlight of his Old Trafford career.
Injury and inconsistency blighted his progress as he became a peripheral figure under Ferguson, David Moyes and now Van Gaal.
He had an unsuccessful loan spell at Fiorentina last season - and has only made two appearances this term.
Despite vowing to fight for his United future, he has failed to convince Van Gaal he can be a part of the Dutchman's long-term plans.

Another flair player ruined by Ferguson
