Borussia Dortmund are set to open talks with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan over a new contract.

Gundogan, 24, arrived from FC Nurnberg in 2011 and has become a key component of the Dortmund side with his performances in the 2012-13 Champions League -- which he crowned with a goal in the Wembley final defeat against Bayern Munich -- reportedly attracting the attention of Manchester United and Arsenal.

The Germany international had been sidelined for nearly 14 months before his return in October, following back problems which led to a surgery on his spine in June 2014, and he limped out of a friendly with Fortuna Dusseldorf in January. However, Dortmund are still keen to tie him down to a new deal.

"Michael Zorc will certainly tackle this issue in the next weeks," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild.

According to the paper, the club and the player's representatives are set to meet following the first leg of the Champions League clash with Juventus.

Despite penning a new one-year-deal at Dortmund last season, tying him to the club until 2016, Gundogan is entering the final year of his contract.

In the midst of a terrible start to the Bundesliga season which sees them lie in 15th place, the club managed to convince attacker Marco Reus to commit his future until 2019, and now want to open talks with the 24-year-old.

"I don't want to say anything about this. But I am delighted that Marco has prolonged his contract," Gundogan told the paper.

We were closing to wrapping him up, Barcelona came in last minute. He then put us on hold, raised his demands to Barcelona, they were considering it but now they are after Pogba instead. He came running back to us and we told him where to go apparently. Now he's looking to stay at Dortmund because the top clubs are now put off by his actions and more importantly his demands.

Paris Saint-Germain are another club interested in Gundogan but, according to Bild, they have been rejected by the player.

The French champions reportedly offered the German £163,000-a-week to join but he has dismissed the offer.

Gundogan is said to have no interest in moving to France, with his preferred destination being German champions Bayern Munich.

Manchester City have signed Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.

The 25-year-old, who will miss Euro 2016 and the start of the new Premier League season through injury, becomes the first signing for incoming City manager Pep Guardiola.

City have reportedly paid the Bundesliga side a fee of about £20m.

"When I learned of City's interest my heart was set on coming. Things things have moved very quickly," he said.

The Premier League club's director of football Txiki Begiristain has praised Gundogan's "work ethic and technical ability".

"He is an intelligent and versatile midfielder who can operate in a number of different roles," Begiristain added. "He will be a very important player for us in the coming years."

Would be wary about signing a guy who can dislocate his knee in training.
