Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear host, suspended by BBC after 'fracas'

Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended by the BBC after what it called a "fracas" with a producer.

Sources said he was accused of hitting the producer in an incident last week, and the remaining three episodes of the current series might not be broadcast.

The BBC confirmed one episode - due for broadcast on Sunday - would not be shown, but gave few further details.

Clarkson, 54, has not commented, but has been joking on social media about films that could replace Sunday's show.

He was given what he called his "final warning" last May after claims he used a racist word during filming.

At the time, he said the BBC had told him he would be sacked if he made "one more offensive remark, anywhere, at any time".

In a statement earlier, the BBC said: "Following a fracas with a BBC producer, Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation.

"No-one else has been suspended.

"Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday.

"The BBC will be making no further comment at this time."

Top Gear was censured by Ofcom for using a "racial" term in its Burma special programme

BBC News special correspondent Lucy Manning said sources had confirmed reports Clarkson was suspended for "allegedly hitting a producer".

"The incident is believed to have happened last week, but was reported to the BBC on Monday and dealt with on Tuesday," she added.

"The next two episodes of Top Gear will not be broadcast and it's understood that a third programme, the final of the series, is unlikely to be transmitted."

'Sorry Ed'

Clarkson's representatives have yet to reply to requests for a comment.

In an exchange on Twitter, Clarkson and co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May have been suggesting films that could be aired in place of the Sunday's Top Gear episode.

Later - in an apparent reference to Ed Miliband - Clarkson tweeted: "Sorry Ed. It seems I knocked your 'I'm a human' piece down the news agenda."

Justine Miliband, the Labour leader's wife, has given an interview to the BBC saying she expects personal attacks on her husband to be "really vicious" as May's election approaches.

To me the program has run its course in its current format.

The scripted 'reality' and banter between them is so dead.

Couldn't agree more

But it's the BBC biggest earner

Exported around the globe

Id put good money on this and all of clarksons little mishaps bein publicity stunts

He may be all the things above but the reality is that he is really good at what he does and the show will be shit without him.

What i do not understand is why the BBC have not looked for a replacement in recent years. They have put themselves in a vulnerable position.

don't think he's racist, he's pretty lax on his political correctness though, but that's why a lot of people like him, he's one of the few presenters on TV who appear to behave like a normal person without an agenda or care for politics

The BBC should let him go. They have a lot of making up to do as their brand has gone sour over the past couple of years. Keeping him on will serve the critics that they're only out for the almighty pound.

It would be a momentous move if he was sacked, and people might grow to have faith in the integrity of the BBC again.

Personally I want him to stay, even though I barely watch Top Gear anymore.

Would be like Jonathan Ross gate all over again....

He'd still be on our screens, making himself and the network money

They might aswell keep him and make the money themselves

Intergrity doesn't pay the bills

People will find something else that they don't agree with the BBC on and their integrity will be questioned again.... the cycle continues

Like somone on here said there's no morality in capitalism

The morality of capitalism comes from the humans who participate in it.

Believe it or not, most capitalism is moral - it's small businesses trading with other small businesses. It's when we are talking about Super-Capitalism when morality becomes nebulous.

Capitalism is the greatest thing that's ever happened to humanity. It's humans that fuck it up.

Jeremy Clarkson dropped from Top Gear, BBC confirms

_81758314_479aa896-6307-4108-8d19-916fadClarkson called himself a "dinosaur" in his newspaper column

Jeremy Clarkson's contract will not be renewed after a physical altercation with a producer, the BBC's director general Tony Hall has said.

Lord Hall said he had "not taken this decision lightly" and recognised it would "divide opinion".

However, he added "a line has been crossed" and he "cannot condone what has happened on this occasion".

Clarkson was suspended on 10 March, following what was called a "fracas" with Oisin Tymon in a Yorkshire hotel.

The row was said to have occurred because no hot food was provided for him following a day's filming.

An internal investigation began last week, led by Ken MacQuarrie, the director of BBC Scotland.

Mr Tymon did not file a formal complaint and it is understood Clarkson reported himself to BBC bosses.

After that, the BBC's director of television, Danny Cohen, felt he had no choice but to suspend the presenter pending an investigation.

The decision caused an outpouring of support from Top Gear fans, with more than a million people signing an online petition to reinstate him.

Jeremy Clarkson took a slightly dull and failing car programme and turned it in to the biggest factual TV show in the World.

But this sacking has nothing to do with style, opinions, popularity - or even his language on the show.

It's about what stars are allowed to get away with off screen, a topic that's been top of the agenda for the BBC in recent months.

The corporation has had to overhaul all of its policies and attitudes towards bullying and harassment, and a long verbal tirade and a physical assault would have crossed the line for any member of staff.

Clarkson may be popular with the audience, and the BBC really did not want to lose him, but this was a star who admitted he was on his final warning and a corporation that was under intense scrutiny over what its top talent can and cannot get away with.

Writing in his column in the Sun newspaper earlier this month, Clarkson had appeared to hint he was close to quitting, calling himself a "dinosaur" and adding: "These big imposing creatures have no place in a world which has moved on."

It is expected that Top Gear, one of BBC Two's most popular programmes, will continue without Clarkson, who will now become the subject of a bidding war by other broadcasters.

The magazine show is one of the BBC's biggest properties, with overseas sales worth an estimated £50m a year for the corporation's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide.

Whether Clarkson's co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond will remain with the show has yet to be confirmed.

All three had their contracts up for renewal this year.

Meanwhile, one of Clarkson's potential replacements, Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, has rubbished press speculation that he was to join the show.

"Not only is it not true, it's absolute nonsense," he told his listeners on Wednesday morning.

Media captionChris Evans says the current Top Gear presenters are "the best they could be"

"From what I've seen on Twitter and various social media, there's a 50/50 split approximately as to whether me being involved in the show is a good idea.

"In TV or radio, if you get a 50/50 love/hate reaction that usually equals massive hit. I used to work for [ratings body] Barb and knock on people's doors and this was the rule of thumb.

"However, I'm in the no camp. So regardless of whether it would be a hit, I'm voting a no for myself on that show, so that's never going happen.

"And that's the end of that."
