MERSE SAYS: Roy Hodgson will definitely start him and for me he's still the first name on the team sheet. He's played more than 100 games for his country, he's our all-time leading goalscorer and he's still an exceptional footballer. Fast forward to the Euros and imagine if Wayne Rooney wasn't in the line-up. That would be a huge shock and Russia would be absolutely delighted.

MERSE SAYS: Milner has got the legs, he can get around the pitch and he is experienced. He can run all day, which is important because it is going to be so hot over in France. As a free transfer for Liverpool, he has got to be one of the best signings of the season. If he and Dier can stay in front of the back four and be disciplined then we should be all right.

Think henderson and Lallana could be looking over thier shoulders too, both were poor last night along with the CBS

Martin Lipton(The Sun) was riding hard for 3HUNNA on Sunday Supplement. Dropped a F64 filled with dusty stats to defend him and went with the same front 4 as Merson but with 3HUNNA @ #10

Keep hearing 'hes our leader, only one with tournement experience, he understands the tournement pressure'

like say he has turned up at every tournement since 2002

Wayne Rooney has been coasting for the better part of two years, and his small patches of form do nothing but distract from the fact that ultimately, he is not good enough anymore to command the reputation he does. He has relied upon penalties to give him landmark goalscoring records that mask his poor form. His performances do not warrant a starting spot for club or country, but at least at Manchester United, he can argue the alternatives are all ten years or more younger than he is (they are still better, but experience counts for something).

For England, Rooney’s two positions of No.9 and No.10 (his “best position” is always the one he currently is not playing in, because otherwise how would be the media excuse his terrible form?) were filled against Germany by two players who are younger, faster, fitter and frankly better than he is.
