What’s behind Man City’s special relationship with Spanish second tier club Girona FC?

By  Muhammad Butt

Manchester City’s relationship with Girona FC is a special if not a formal one.

Though lately things have cooled off between the two clubs, this tiny Catalan club have played an enormous part in the present and future of Manchester City. But just what is this part they played? What is their relationship? Squawka investigates.

Who are Girona?

Girona playing Blackburn Rovers in a pre-season friendly last summer.

Girona are a small club in Catalunya, most notable for their recent exploits in the Segunda Division, several near-misses with promotion attempts to reach the promised land of La Liga. But now Girona will be better known for their relationship with Manchester City.

What have City done?

In 2015, the Sky Blues invested relatively small amounts of cash (for them) to help Girona acquire young talent. They loaned right-back Chidiebere Nwakali, a player from their academy to Catalunya for a year. In January they sent Pablo Maffeo back to Catalunya too (they had originally signed him from Espanyol).

City also signed Ruben Sobrino, a player Girona had been targeting but were unable to afford, and loaned him out to Girona for the season. They even signed Girona’s promising young defender Florian Lejeune then loaned him back to the Estadio Montilivi for the rest of the 2015/16 season. This influx of new talent would give Girona a huge chance to push for promotion to La Liga.

Why did City do this?

One simple reason: Pep Guardiola.

In early 2015 Pep’s brother, international football agent Pere Guardiola, headed a consortium that bought a controlling stake in Girona. His aim was obviously to get promotion and then establish the Albirrojos as a top-flight side in La Liga.

City saw this as a perfect chance to get closer to Pere, and by extension, get themselves a genuine chance at landing their number one managerial dream signing: Pep Guardiola. City executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Beguiristan already knew both men from their time at Barcelona, but renewing the relationship would only increase their chances of landing a manager sought after by so many major clubs.

After all their investment, City’s gambit paid off. They got a chance to pitch Guardiola their project, and the Catalan coach was sufficiently impressed – agreeing to become their coach in winter 2016.

So what happens now?

As Girona helped City obtain their objective, they will always have a special place in the history of Manchester City. But will City’s affections continue? Technically they have no more need for Girona, but they would be wise to continue their funding.

After all, if they were to now abandon Girona then Pere Guardiola would be none too pleased – and that could come to effect negotiations with Pep Guardiola somewhere down the line when it comes to contract renewal time.

Whether or not City will send more players to Catalunya in the future is unknown – at the time of writing, no Manchester City players are on loan at Girona for the 2016/17 season, but one thing is for sure: this tiny Catalan club have played a huge part in the history of Manchester City.
