Who is Sam Walker? The notorious city hardman who wants to write children's books

Self-confessed criminal Sam Walker claims to have clocked up more than 100 offences through an illicit lifestyle that began when he was a child.

His underworld past includes stints behind bars for everything from threatening police to possessing counterfeit cash.

He made headlines over alleged threats to Everton star Ross Barkley and has claimed that his heart is set on writing children’s books.

Drug dealing first brought Walker to the public’s attention - and his actions have courted controversy ever since.

Jailed for four-and-a-half years back in 2008 the “intelligent” 33-year-old rose to prominence as part of a gang peddling heroin and crack cocaine on the streets of Halton.

Earning up to £2,500-a-day the mob sold substances around Widnes, Runcorn and the surrounding area before being caught in a police sting that saw £12m of drugs seized along with luxury cars, bundles of cash and jewellery.

Since his initial release - after serving half that sentence - he has repeatedly been hauled before the courts for a catalogue of petty criminality that has frustrated judges trying to make him see the error of his ways.

Between 2012 and 2014 he was hit with a stunning collection of charges that he either admitted or was found guilty of.

From counterfeit cash scams to a catalogue of driving offences his rap list - which he believes can be added up to reach more than 20 years of jail terms - continued to grow.

And courtroom outbursts have been a feature of his repeat appearances.

Tirades from the dock have seen him brand sentences as a “stitch up” and slam a hearing as a “kangaroo court”.

Another moment of madness showcasing his brazen disregard for authority saw him leave a threatening voice message on a police officer’s phone. He saw a previous jail sentence extended for that.

Ahead of the last World Cup detectives were even left probing a tweet, allegedly sent from Walker, threatening to end Barkley’s career.

The sinister message, said to have been sparked in a row over an ex-girlfriend of the footballer, said: “Inbox me a number for you, ya little rat!

“You know wot this is about so don’t play stupid or your footie career will come to an end!”

But amid the crimes and prison sentences Walker - whose past addresses have ranged from Vauxhall to Garston to the city centre - has also enjoyed courtroom success.

He was cleared in 2013 of being involved in a plan to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into Doncaster prison while an inmate there - after which he unveiled a black T-shirt bearing the slogan “Not Guilty” beneath his jacket.

He was also found not guilty of being one of three masked men armed with Beretta air pistols who forced their way into a home near Runcorn as well as another counterfeit cash accusation relating back to 2014.

Repeatedly insisting he wants to turn his back on crime he has also talked about writing inspirational books for children.

Yet he returns to jail today with the words of Judge Steven Everett ringing in his ears.

Summing up the prolific criminal’s underworld credentials he simply said: “You are 33 now and your record is just dreadful. There really isn’t any other way of describing it.

“Here you are at 33, when you look back on the last 15 or 16 years, you have spent most of that time in prison. Here you have really the best part of your adult life you have thrown it all away. You have spent all your time in and out of prison.”
