  1. NBC taps Liman for 'Knight Rider'Network readying two-hour backdoor pilotBy JOSEF ADALIAN LimanOriginal 'Knight Rider' was a hit for NBC from 1982-86.NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," tapping Doug Liman to produce a "Transformers"-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.Peacock is readying a two-hour backdoor pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature sked allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside exec producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Prods.Success of "Transformers" had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that smallscreen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes. It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original skein, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, skein is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car. There's also huge potential for advertiser integration. General Motors was all over "Transformers," and it's easy to see NBC striking a rich deal with a single automaker to serve as the exclusive auto brand for the new "Knight." It's understood preliminary talks have already begun.Peacock is also veering from current conventional wisdom by moving forward with a telepic/backdoor pilot for "Knight." Nets rarely produce telepics with an eye on turning them into series anymore, in part because the telepic has essentially disappeared from the broadcast network scene. But NBC execs no doubt feel "Knight Rider" is enough of a pre-sold brand to lure an audience. What's more, the telepic could serve as a good replacement for repeats come spring, perhaps replacing an encore of "Heroes" or "Bionic Woman.""Knight" originally aired on NBC from 1982 until 1986, with Hasselhoff playing smooth crimefighter Michael Knight. A spinoff skein, "Team Knight Rider," aired in syndication during the 1997-98 season.Project was put together by CAA and Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment.Glen Larson created the original "Knight Rider" for Universal Television.

  8. Slain reggae star Lucky Dube was remembered at a memorial service by friends and family who railed against his senseless shooting death and his bandmates who entertained a dancing crowd outside by playing some of his songs.Dube, 43, was gunned down in front of two of his children last week in an apparent carjacking attempt in suburban Johannesburg. Four men who were arrested in connection with the murder appeared briefly in court Tuesday."We have lost a legend, an icon," said Skipha Shabalala, lead guitarist with Dube's band, said Wednesday. "Why was this man killed in such a brutal and barbaric manner?"Posters of the Other Entertainment Photos Memorial Service Held for Reggae Star166 star with his trademark waist-length dreadlocks covered the walls of the packed Bassline, a popular downtown music venue. Seated on the floor, barefoot and dressed in white, were members of the Shembe, a Zulu Christian sect to which Dube belonged.Outside, up to 1,500 fans -- many wearing the Rastafarian colors of green, gold and red -- gathered to watch the service on a large screen."Today we are here to mourn, but also to celebrate the life of someone who made us very proud as South Africans," musician Sipho Mabuse said.Dube, who launched his career in the 1980s with criticism of the apartheid regime, went on to become a huge international star recording more than 20 albums and sharing stages with the likes of Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Ziggy Marley and Sting.Ivor Haarburger, chief executive of Gallo Records, described Dube as an "enormous talent" who was a quiet and reserved man, but whose stage performances were "amazing.""We as a nation are shocked and saddened at the news. With this senseless and disturbing act a great spirit has been taken from us. It is a loss felt by millions throughout the world," he said.South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world, recording an average of 50 murders each day. U.N. crime statistics say one in three Johannesburg residents has been robbed. Rapes and assaults also are common.Dube expressed his concerns about crime in his lyrics, most notably his 1999 song "Crime and Corruption," in which he wrote: "Do you ever worry about leaving home and coming back in a coffin, with a bullet through your head?"Messages of condolences were read out during the service, including statements from Peter Gabriel and the presidents of the Gambia and Senegal.Interspersed throughout the service were performances by some of Dube's fellow musicians, as well as the artist's band. "I am sad. Even if the people who did this are arrested, they will still live," said musician Bhekumuzi Luthuli, barely able to sing for the tears choking him.In another heartbreaking moment, two of Dube's seven children took to the stage at the end of the service to read out a statement from the family."We are going to miss you forever," said a sobbing Laura, holding on to her elder sister Bongi. Then as Dube's band broke into song, the crowd outside paid tribute to their hero the only way they knew how -- by taking to their feet and dancing."Love those who gimme war," they cheered as the band played the title song from Dube's latest album "Respect.""I love those who hate me. I bless even those who curse me. Gimme, gimme respect," they sang.

  15. G-Unit member, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, will likely be sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a loaded gun Tuesday . The New York Daily News reports that Prodigy interrupted the trial yesterday to confess to owning the unlicensed .22-caliber pistol found in an armrest of his bullet-proofed Chevy Suburban last October. As part of a plea deal offered by prosecutors, the rapper will reportedly receive a prison sentence of 3 ½ years. The Queensbridge native was pulled over in Manhattanâs Chelsea neighborhood last October after making an illegal u-turn. When cops searched the bulletproof Chevy Suburban that he and producer The Alchemist were traveling in, they found the illegal .22 caliber pistol stashed in the center console.
